The Capital Country Truffle Festival is on this weekend.

They’ve got a hefty schedule of events if you’re interested in getting to know local truffle production better.

Apparently despite some early concerns the recent frosts have seen the truffles coming up in time.

Now I’m drooling too, and I don’t even know what I’m drooling about!

I should add that the Truffle Salsa comes in a jar and is around $20. For the truffle butter – combine 40 grams salsa with 160 grams butter and 25 grams of finely grated parmesan cheese. Mmmmmm, now I’m drooling…

Granny – a relatively affordable way to sample the taste of truffle is to get some Tetsuya’s Truffle Salsa (they have it at the Mart Deli at the Fyshwick markets) – a mixture of truffles and mushrooms. One of the best ways to have it is mix it with some butter and spread it on some good quality bread rolls – you’ll never think of bread and butter the same way again! It also turns the humble Beef Strog into something pretty special.

Dammit! I am going to try one of these truffley things!

They reckon the flavour of truffles is another distinct taste “type”, along with sweet, sour, salty, bitter etc

I’ve never had them, but I do love what Porcini do to a dish and imagine truffles are an upmarket version of this.

Truffles don’t really taste like anything except truffles. I suppose mushrooms is about the closest you could get; but that doesn’t reflect the deep, earthy, aromatic flavour you get from a good truffle.

Try one (or some white truffle oil on pasta or a risotto) and you’ll see what all the fuss is about.

Wow, it all sounds like fun! Unfortunately, I wouldn’t know a truffle from a bar of soap. Are they sort of like mushrooms? What do they taste like? I hope we are employed again in time to enjoy some of these events.

They are peeling truffles onto a PLASTIC plate? argh.

For your information:

Last Saturday (13th June) at the Farmers Market at EPIC there was a stand selling truffles. I’m not sure if they were the same bunch of people, or if they would be there this coming weekend.
