The Venue cops some big fines

I had thought The Venue had died a controversial death some months ago, can anyone clarify that?

In any event Simon Corbell has announced that the company running the Erindale boozer’s sole director has copped a slew of fines.

“”The company’s sole director was fined in the ACT Magistrates Court for employing security staff without holding a master licence and failing to have a current workers compensation policy,” Mr Corbell said.

“The Liquor Board also made a decision to impose penalties on the Venue for employing security staff without holding a master licence.

“In addition on three occasions, liquor licensing inspectors found that a fire-exit door had not been kept clear during business hours and in two instances it was locked.

“Failing to keep fire exits clear is a dangerous practice and could result in an order that the premises close for business.

“There were also matters relating to the state of repair of the premises and the presence of a person under the age of 18 in a bar area.”

Apparently this is intended to serve as a warning to other proprietors throughout Canberra, although suspending nearly half the fine as some sort of guarantee of good behaviour strikes me as gutless. Give them the full fine and if there’s bad behaviour in future fine them again.

There’s never an excuse for locked fire exits.

I’ve been led to believe (in the last few days) that they’d be re-opening within the next few weeks under new management and with a new name. Hope this doesn’t set that back too much (the 8-ball players of canberra need this venue.)

You’re right on the money.

Word on the street was that they were under investigation for far less-trivial matters than the ones mentioned above.

Like being an ice den for the rebels ?

Do you play fnaah?

Sounds to me like the blue meanies were determined to shut that place down one way or another. Word on the street was that they were under investigation for far less-trivial matters than the ones mentioned above.

That is a strange turn of phrase, and strange use of an apostrophe.

Does it mean “the sole director of the company running the Erindale boozer”? So that the apostrophe operates on the entire phrase [the company running the Erindale boozer]?

What a weird way to express it. Were you being deliberately obscure?

I’ve played there a couple of times – crappy venue, won’t be going back. And I remember the fire exits being locked on those occasions (we wanted to load in through the fire exits at the back and couldn’t … had to lug everything past the punters and wind up the stupid staircases).
