The view from Emu Bank

emu bank

I found myself at Emu Bank yesterday checking out the bars I have heard are popping up in the locale.

Aside from the longstanding Lighthouse sadly none of them seem to take in the views of Lake Ginninderra.

Which remains a beautiful local somewhat let down by its denizens.

The Lake side of Emu Bank is also sadly derelict. Landlords asking too much for the lake views?

Emu bank has the charm of a bus depot, the appeal of a wart, and the atmosphere you would only otherwise find in a tramps vest. Who in their right mind would go there socially?

The Arts Centre is very nice.

I’m guessing the fact that the BCC spends 99% of its time arguing about who should be wearing the Grand Poobah’s hat, and there’s no time to do any actual beneficial work for the community they are representing, probably doesn’t help…..

It’s like a wrinkly version of Game of Thrones.

Hopefully with slightly less incest and nudity.

Oh I dont know…surely that would liven it up a little?

Such a pity. That area of Belconnen has so much potential.

And yet it remains a cultural wasteland.

Why? I have no idea.

The lack of vibrance on Emu Bank stems from poor planning and ad-hoc development. Whoever designed the area failed to make the shoreline pathway a purposeful thoroughfare – a problem compounded by buildings that only provide access from the street side via a series of poorly designed carparks.

I do the Cliff Young Shuffle along the lakefront every morning, it is sadly derelict but has good potential. The Haha and La Da Da seem to attract reasonable numbers and the few restaurants that look out onto the lake take good advantage of the views. But it does need a good clean up, the pavers on the “esplanade” need replacing, trees and grass need cutting, HJs and RRs need to clean up their surrounds.

There is a TAMS crew that do a litter/rubbish pickup every morning, which is a good start.

Some friends and I were down there for lunch on the weekend…other than the fairly well kept Lighthouse outdoor area (I guess they wash the spew off everyday) the other eateries there are knee-deep in garbage.

Walk past Red Rooster/Hungry Jacks and their outdoor bins have overflowed with garbage which the birds have got into and spread all over the lake.

Its a pity because the lakeside is pretty (excluding the shopping Trolleys). The new development along there (which went tup several years ago now) included some areas with water views but they sadly never seem to get any tenant. Maybe too expensive?

The London was doing a roaring trade when I went past this afternoon. On the EMu Bank side though…

If they do you can’t see they’re looking for custom from emu bank of a saturday afternoon

No, they only open at 5 – which, as I’ve said as recently as Friday night on my blog, this is a mistake. They’ve got incredible lake views, huge glass doors which slide back onto a deck, and being more in the middle of Emu Bank, have better views than the Lighthouse. Being upstairs, they’ve got a superb vantage point. It’s a waste not opening earlier in the afternoon.

Stick with the Lighthouse. I’ve been drinking and eating there fairly regularly for ten years now. I feel like an old fart (because I am one!) among all the youngsters, but it’s still a nice place to spend an hour or two on a weekend afternoon.

When it gets dark so early what’s the point of a nice view of a black lake?

I think both Ha Ha Bar and – particularly – above it, La De Da, take in the views pretty well?

I’ll clean that up for $2.
