Territory And Municipal Services advise that they’re done schoolin’ on killin’ and are re-opening the killing fields after their kangaroo cull in the nature reserves:

The ACT Government wishes to advise that Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve, Goorooyaroo Nature Reserve, Mount Painter Nature Reserve, Callam Brae Nature Reserve, Jerrabomberra West Nature Reserve and Kama Nature Reserve have been reopened to the public today, Monday 27 June 2011. Unleased territory land adjacent to Kama Nature Reserve has also been reopened.

The sites had been closed since 3 June 2011 to allow for a controlled cull of over-abundant kangaroos to take place.

“A total of 2439 kangaroos have been culled to ensure these grassland and woodland sites are protected from overgrazing in coming years,” Daniel Iglesias, Manager within Parks and Conservation Service, said today.

“Don’t think that some “bogan” working for TAMS looked across a nature reserve and said “there’s a heap of roos out there. Lets ask the boss if we can go and shoot the bastards!””

Time_killer …That may be close to the truth for the first cull at Googong Dam. Thanks for the link.

Mate I’m sure if you can come up with a workable efficient sensible cost-effective rational alternative to the current method of culling, the gubmnt will be all ears. But at this point, you have simply made a statement with no basis in reality. Do you really think the gubmnt hasn’t looked at a multitude of options before settling on the current method? Seriously.

Seriously? Wasting roos once a year or whatever in their thousands is hardly strategic.

Cheap and easy sounds closer.

Cheap and easy seems like a great solution! Why would they want to make it difficult and expensive?

What’s your viable alternative?

Show us the data and then we can all debate alternatives. The science needs to be available for review. The adhoc way the government started this program and its reluctance to provide detailed information tend to make us all suspicious. I don’t think the government have presented a strong case for the cull and have relied on peoples ignorant bigotry to split support down political lines. At best this cull is an indulgent experiment.

From the TAMS website.

Its a big document and I havent read all of it. But it presents a strong case for the cull.

Well, most of the ways you would cull a population to control it many years into the future (kill or the males, or kill all the breeding females, or whatever) are not really fashionable with populations of “wild” animals, as being selective like that tends to change animals relativity quickly (over several generations). This is how we end up with stupid looking pets, like sausage dogs. Who wants sausage roos running around. Not me.

I may have got off topic there.

One would think that the ACT government could come up with a more strategic approach to the issue rather than just blasting two and a half thousand roos to oblivion everytime someone thinks there are too many of them.

And that figure doesn’t include the 900 joeys that also died, clubbed to death by the way, something that a spokesman on 666 this morning had a very difficult time admitting.

What the hell? Where did my comment go? I meant to post:

“Are there birds with more than 2 legs?”

Still think that there are plenty of other feral animals that could also be “humanely” shot as well: foxes, rabbits, feral cats, feral dogs, minor birds etc.

Are there birds with more than 2 legs?
I’ve seen the minor birds hopping around outside King O’Malley’s in Civic. Clearly a violation of their liquor licence conditions!

Yes, you can easily describe the birds (the two legged variety) who hang around King O’Malleys as minor.

This is a victory for the people of the ACT and shows a new level of maturity on the part of government and the general population.

There were no silly protests, no young wailing females with unkempt hair and names like Skye calling it murder, no foreign media picking up the story and trying to make us look like barbarians, no fanatical vegetarians and vegans hogging the camera lenses of WIN News and the ABC and no wimpy, bleeding heart leftie letters to The Canberra Times (apart from the usual silly bleatings from the usual suspects day after day).

I think that means we are growing up.

I’m getting out the popcorn in anticipation of the comments of the ‘survival of the cuddliest’ crowd!

Make that 2440.. a monster grey decided to take my bullbar on over the weekend. Fortunately the bullbar won.
