The war upon the bettongs continues at Mulligan's Flat

Territory and Municipal Services have been further incensed by another attack on the fenceline protecting their endangered Bettong population from foxes:

“This wilful vandalism is starting to border on eco-terrorism. The Sanctuary plays a vital role in ecological research and this vandalism is putting at risk years of planning and research, not to mention an Eastern bettong population which has just been released,” Mr Iglesias said.

“This is a threatened species. It is not located anywhere else on the mainland. The bettong research project involves numerous stakeholders including the ACT Government, Australian National University’s Fenner of School of Environment and Society, CSIRO and James Hutton Institute. It is also supported by the Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary Board of Management.”

Mr Iglesias said the vandalism is also coming at considerable cost to taxpayers.

“Replacing the fencing and repairing all the locks which have been destroyed is taking time and money. It is also simply ridiculous that we need to employ staff to walk along a 12 kilometre fence in the middle of the night to try and ensure it is not compromised by environmental vandals.

“Fortunately our patrol has found this latest hole relatively quickly, but all it takes is one fox to get through and the results could be catastrophic. I urge anyone with information to please pass it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

I heard a snippet of an interview on the ABC on my way home last night, that was connected to the roo cull issue. The spokesperson said that because the protestors were all considered by the general community to be a bunch of rabid, dole bludging, hairy armpitted loonies (and I’m paraphrasing here, but the words were to that effect), then they had nothing to lose in terms of the public perception of them and their actions. Therefore, they don’t care in the slightest how they’re perceived.

An interesting viewpoint, but I think it’s one that just lets them do completely stupid things, such as cutting the fences and digging up carcases without any real goal of doing some good. I wonder where else such a philosophy – You think I’m an idiot, therefore, I’ll be an idiot. – is practised? Besides Charnwood. And by white commodore drivers.

Immature human beings. I.e. adolescents.

Under conditions of which you point out are normally accompanied by some form of rebellion. That rebellious attitude sometimes manifests itself in, say, driving a white commodore like a d*ck, or joining Greenpeace, or becoming a Socialist (the last two are pretty much the same thing).

Now, most in any of those groups above eventually grow up and grow out of stupid behaviour, often laughing it off as e.g. “jeez I was a d*ckhead back then”. Unfortunately, a few don’t.

I think this is why a lot of people are saying to these activists “you need help”.

Of course, it may not be that the baddies are “anti-bettong”, but rather “pro-fox”.

I wonder if it is worth Neighbourhood Watch calling in some volunteers for the area. I cannot believe that some folk are so damn maliciously stupid as to do this. And the arrant hypocrisy of the ‘bugger the environment – save the roos’ gang is beyond belief. Are these people allowed to breed and vote?

Betting on
the bettongs going?
Beaten by goons
bettongs may be bygones.

I hope not.

Have to note that when asked, one of the screwlooses from the Kangaroo Protests said that while they didn’t condone it, they wouldn’t speak against it either.

Kind of strange that they’re outraged by the population control of a plentiful species but won’t lift a finger over a threat to a very endangered species. Idiots.

Lets get some remote controlled drones to film them and some mutilated bettongs.

Do these people (vandals) have a brain at all?

Clearly not. They are potentially causing the extion of a species.
