The Western Concourse at the airport begun

Chief Minister Gallagher is letting us know she’s laid the foundation stone for the Western Concourse
Terminal at the Canberra Airport.

The new Terminal is a major component of the Airport’s $420 million redevelopment that will provide Canberra and regional communities with world class airport facilities.

The Chief Minister said 300 permanent on-site employees will work on the terminal, servicing suppliers from more than 100 local businesses.

“The Canberra Airport management team must be congratulated for this significant investment in the local economy, and their vote of confidence in the quality and expertise of our local suppliers,” she said.

The Terminal, to be completed in 2013, will deliver a 30,000 square metre building area with a range of new and improved facilities. These include additional check-in counters and aerobridges, double the current passenger screening area and baggage handling capacity, and an indoor taxi queuing area. There will also be new airline club lounges, and food, beverage and retail stores.

We’re also promised all the environmental bits one could dream of.

UPDATE: The airport has their own release combined with the concept drawing we’ve now got.

The picture shows four Qantas planes and four others. Looks reasonable to me.

It’s good to see the airport developing. Been months and months since there was any road changes. Used to be that every day was a new adventure, and people who hadn’t been out there for a while would drive around in confusion and wonderment, going the wrong way through the roundabouts, running the stop signs, ignoring the road markings…

Not sure how this indoor taxi rank system is going to work. Good for the passengers to be sheltered from the weather, of course, but if the cabs are inside as well, there had better be a bloody good ventilation system. And if the cabs turn their engines off for the usual wait of half an hour to two hours, some of them will need a jump start when he plane lands and the passengers arrive!

That’s interesting, the picture indicates that Virgin is to be a much smaller presence than our old friends at Quaint-Arse, I wonder if the Virgin mob think that’s a good portrayal?

They’re fine with it. When they pay as much as Qantas does for their usage and have the same volume they can have the same size too

Its a multiuser terminal. Strictly speaking anyone can land anywhere, although I imagine one end will be Qantas, the other virgin and tiger…
As it is though Qantas still fly a lot of dash-8’s our way, so there is still the tarmac walk in the cold 🙂

Virgin too will soon be flying ATR prop aircraft into Canberra instead of some of the jet services, so expect some cold walks to their aircraft too.

1 word – yay…

I can’t wait until the airport is finished and Canberra actually has a real airport rather than the oversized shed that was there before.
