I saw this on Cotter Road on Saturday afternoon and thought it should get bonus points for its apparently very rushed parking as well as being a white Commodore.

The only thing wrong with that Commodore is that it isn’t burnt out. They mustn’t have had any matches with them.
I saw 2 smouldering wrecks on Tharwa Road on Australia day, just outside the suburbs and only hundreds of metres apart. That, on top of the Tharwa locals having to spray paint over the graffiti on Tharwa bridge made me real proud to be Aussie.

Or they’ve been stolen, taken for a joyride, and dumped. I see new cars on a weekly basis when driving home late at night. They’re always earlier model cars (easier to steal) and have some kind of damage. Clearly not parked waiting for the owner to arrive with a new rego label 😛

This has probably been done to death so apologies…

What is the reason behind so many cars parked on the side of major thoroughfare in Canberra? It’s become something of a conversation piece with interstate visitors. We do the whole trip around the embassies, take in the lake etc., talk about all the cars parked on the side of the road…

It seems to start early Friday and then really pick up overnight Fri/Sat and then maintains numbers until Sunday afternoon.

I’d always thought it was a result of being booked for drink driving but now I’m not so sure.

If they don’t have number plates on them, it’s because they’ve been stopped by the cops for being unregistered.

This is a bit off topic don’t you think?

Anyway, what you are describing is probably the results of a police roadside inspection. Cops pull-over dodgy looking cars and issue defect notices to non-compliant vehicles. As the law says these cars are not roadworthy, they sit on the side of the road until the owner can have them towed away.

On Google Maps, right click the location on the map that you want to refer to, to reveal a contextual menu. Select “What’s here?”. After that, if a green arrow appears, click on it, and some coordinates should show up. Copy and paste them. Make sure to get any negative signs in front of numbers.

Then, anyone can use those numbers in Google Maps on a computer or smartphone, or key them into a car GPS.

Thanks for the tutorial. And after checking it out via Street View I had the location a bit out too.

Here ’tis: -35.327201, 148.957465

As for the location, I’d say it was between the two 5 symbols on the link below, a couple of corners before Camp Cottermouth.

The symbols don’t show up on the aerial view. This may cause some problems for recovery teams.

The symbols show up when I view the link; do you have labels on? Anyway, as I said, it’s on Cotter Road, a couple of corners before Camp Cottermnouth, assuming you’re driving there from Duffy. It’s the only white Commodore parked off road on the right hand side.

Pretty hard to miss.

What’s the go with dumped cars? I need a power window motor, if that VT has power windows it’d be exactly what I need. That car is obviously going to be scrapped by the government, how do I go about obtaining parts off it legally? Don’t really fancy rocking up and having the police finding my prints all over it….

Maybe talk to its owner? Just being stolen and dumped doesnt mean its fair game.

Or else just go to a wrecker. Its not an unheard of model.

This would only be a problem if the police already have your prints. 🙂

On a more serious note. If, as someone has said, the car is stolen, the insurance company will want it as whole as it can be.

Got to be quick to get the shade covered parks…

I would like to be sympathetic but, based on the fact that it’s been there for at least 4 days now, it is probably stolen and, if so, I hope the thieves hurt them selves.

If none of the above is correct, it is a good advertisment for reversing cameras.

To be honest I didn’t even think of notifying the coppers. I had assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that it would have happened at night time a day or two earlier.

I don’t think there would have been any injuries of note to the driver or any occupants unless no seatbelts were worn.

Bugger.

Hope they weren’t too hurt. It appears as though no other vehicles were involved which is fortunate, particularly given that section of road is popular with cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders.

Google maps location? Did you report it to ACT Policing?
