Katy Gallagher has the happy news that The Whitlams are going to headline Canberra’s New Year’s Eve celebrations in the City:

Acting Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has announced that one of Australia’s favourite bands, The Whitlams, will headline the free entertainment at this year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations in the city.

Two prominent sites in the city will again play host to New Year’s Eve celebrations, with a family-friendly concert in Civic Square, a dance party in Garema Place and fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight…

“From 7.00pm, the main stage in Civic Square will be the place for families and music lovers of all ages to come along and enjoy performances by The Whitlams and local Canberra bands.”

The Whitlams will take to the stage in Civic Square before and after the 9pm fireworks display.

They might just get a crowd for that.

Gaaaaaaaawd – just ask me how MUCH I hate the Whitlams?! Who’s bastard trick is that?

Geez it seems I’m the only person here who likes The Whitlams! Can’t wait…I’ll definitely be heading into Civic this year for NYE, unlike the last few years when I’ve stayed far away!

Can’t say I’ve ever heard of them, were they big in Aus? If so, when, as I’ve bene here a decade now.

Most popular in the late nineties, with lots of triple j airplay, and limited commercial success.

I loved the Whitlams 15 years ago.
This is meant to be family entertainment, not cutting edge fusion.
Seems like a step in the right direction to me.

I always assumed the ACT gov’t had some sort of exclusive contract which only allowed them to hire former winners of reality TV lipsync competitions?

I quite liked the Whitlams fifteen years ago.

Fail.

Semi-decent? I thought the Whitlams were playing?

What?! The government have found a somewhat semi-decent act to entertain the masses?

I wonder how “Blow Up the Pokies” will go over with the Labor dignitaries in attendance?

The whitlams blow
