The Illawarra Mercury is displeased that moving Canberra’s news bulletin to Wollongong has bumped the Wooly news to an earlier pre-record.

Wollongong no longer has a live TV news broadcast after WIN Television began pre-recording its Illawarra bulletin.

The move comes after the television station announced two weeks ago that it would produce its Canberra bulletin at the company’s Mount Saint Thomas headquarters.

The Canberra news is read live at 6.30pm by Wollongong presenters Kerryn Johnston and Amy Duggan. As a result, Wollongong’s bulletin has been pre-recorded about 5pm since last Monday.

Cound be worse – last night it took a quarter of an hour for Win to realise ACA was going out with just the soundtrack, and to fix it. The visual was the last frame of the ad that had just finished.

Presumably the Woolly people have people staffing their local news offices that would respond to issues that arise between 5 and 6:30 with at least a newsflash.

That’s outdated thinking, broadcast media is going the way of the dodo. Newspapers are now feeling the pinch because they’re print model is fundamentally past its use by date. Television is also starting to feel it in earnest. Multi channeling will be seen in a few years as the desperate last gasp.

Only 45,000 or so tune into Win News, while ABC Canberra News doesn’t even make it into the Top 50. While broadcast diversity may be shrinking, it’s reach is limited and it’s being usurped by new media – a fantastic example of which we’re logged onto right now.

oh well, its not as if the majority of the news that the Illawarra bulletin will change between 5pm and 6.30pm
