The worst of the worst?

The ABC has a horrific story of a Canberra systems administrator in a government department pleading guilty to using his own baby son (amongst other children) to make child pornography.

The man, who cannot be named, was charged with possessing and producing child pornography, as well as committing acts of indecency with children under the age of 10.

He was accused of producing pornographic images of several children including his baby son.

He allegedly posted the material on the internet between April last year and January this year.

We await the sentence on this one with interest.

Ever since the child pr0n case involving pictures of Bart & Lisa Simpson, and the case of the guy who was charged with child abuse for posting video of a child being taught to be a circus performer by his circus-performer parents (when the video itself was rated MA15 by the censorship board), I’m sceptical about media reports about child abuse cases.
The media and police cry wolf too often.
So, unless we’ve sat in the court room and heard the details of a case, uninformed comment based on media reports is exactly that – uninformed.

You’re sceptical, why? This guy (allegedly) produced child porn, using his own son, as well as other children. The other cases you mentioned (Bart and Lisa, Circus performer) are irrelevant.

We don’t need to sit in court to know the basic details of the case and those are that he produced child porn and committed acts of indecency on children under 10.

+++1 Nailed it.

DJ @9 – Precisely. They aren’t equivalent.

Not quite sure what you’re trying to argue, since you’re agreeing with me, but arguing with me at the same time.

im no lawyer so why is it the supreme court and not the magistrates for sentencing ?

Supreme Court hears matters that are more serious – with minimum sentences of imprisonment being 12 months or more. These are called Indictable offences, and have to be heard in a higher Court – Magistrate’s Court does not have the jurisdiction to hear them.

Let’s hope he doesn’t see the light of day for a very long time.

*shaking head*

The media and police cry wolf too often?

Is there something wrong with you?

I hope it’s not you that something happens to and the cry of wolf gets made and nothing gets done to help. Seriously. Comparing teaching circus performance and using your own child to produce porn… apples and oranges?

Leaving aside actual mental disability and psychiatric issues, I have pretty much the kind of background you mention, Pommy Bastard, in terms of how you characterise pedophiles being formed. And guess what, I find what they do just is as despicable as what the majority of the population do. In fact, I think I have a better idea of just how vile it is.

I also think those who are genuinely mentally incapable – and who understandably have no idea of appropriate boundaries – are very much the minority of pedophiles.

But for the others, I can vouch for the fact that no matter how screwed up and abusive your upbringing, it’s up to you to -choose- whether to continue the abuse. There is no way in the world in today’s climate (or that of the last 40 years, which is what I know of) that you can think pedophilia is socially acceptable.

Other areas of abuse, such as giving your wife the bash, raping “sluts” who “ask for it”, and whacking your children around may be still be more or less acceptable for certain individuals or social groups (although that excuse is wearing very thin these days). Kiddie-fiddling doesn’t fall into those categories – it’s never been regarded as appropriate in any circs.

Why not separate the pedophiles from the rest of the prision population? Or are we happy to turn a blind eye to what happens to them?

Do pedophiles themselves have a ranking system also? Do the pedos who sleep with 12yr olds look down on pedos who sleep with 7yr olds?

Checking the law list I now beleive that i know (pretty darn certain and if it is not then strike me down) who the person is and i will not say. I worked with him a few years ago doing security at night in civic, it struck me as very weird when he said that he used to be a school teacher and now he was a guard and he was very defensive to the point of being offensive when asked about why he was not a teacher any more.

Once again, if it is who i am thinking of then he will have a very hard time in jail.

(sarcasm on)

When you start to recognise the level of mental health problems, intellectual disability and acquired brain injury, the histories of child abuse and neglect and failure of families and social services that many pedophiles carry around with them, and the profound effects of daily exposure to violence and rape that all pedophiles have to endure from day one of their first sentence, it’s hard to characterise all pedophiles as wasters throwing their lives away.

Not all are psychopaths, and even fewer are corporate sharks who could afford good lawyers (and whose children go to the same schools as their judges).

It’s always handy to have a social group against whom our own personal failings and flaws can be made to look smaller in comparison, even make us look like paragons of virtue and social responsibility. And pedophiles in prison are there at the bottom of the pile, doing us all that great favour.

I can only wonder how well all the pedophiles-haters would have done if life had dealt them the same set of crap cards as most of these guys got. Remember the old saying ‘There but for the grace of God go I.’

Or even better remember Dostoyevsky. ‘The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons’

(sarcasm off)

His baby is too young *at the moment*. But what happens when he get a bit older and his mates (and enemies) decide to do a touch of googling ?

yes it will be very interesting to see how light the sentence will be 🙁
