The ABC brings word that the National Zoo and Aquarium is blossoming to four times its current size:

The zoo says it can now build on-site accommodation and will use surrounding land to create an open range zoo.

Zoo director Trent Russell says the zoo will also gain new animals, including the white rhinoceros.

“We won’t be acquiring a lot of new animals in the first instance,” he said.

“There will be some new species that will be coming next year, white rhinos will be one of them.”

Mr Russell said commuters on the Tuggeranong Parkway will be able to see the construction’s progress.

Monorail?

Underground!

To view the moles?

Nope, I’ve just decided that everytime someone mentions light rails or monorail I’m going to mention underground.

But now you’ve mentioned it, why not?

And wombats, of course.

Underground light monorail and replace all the animals with eastern grey kangaroos to protect them.

Perhaps you’ll see a metrotreme.

I went to a zoo once that only had a dog.
It was a shih tzu…

all the water was green sludge, including the moat thing for the white lions, there were empty and overgrown displays and as i said perspex you couldnt see through.
We went to the mogo zoo shortly after that and it was wonderful there. everything nice, new and clean.

That is so funny because I was just saying here today that the one time I went to Mogo zoo I thought it looked quite run-down! Dirty looking enclosures etc. Maybe we both just went at the wrong time to the wrong zoo. 🙂

I don’t believe it!!

Maybe spend a bit og money on some general maintenence and refurb of current enclosures. Last time we took the girls, probably 18 monthes ago it was really gross and run down. Lots of the perpex screens you could not even see through due to fade and scratches.

Wow, really? It is one of the best maintained zoos I’ve been to. A few scratches on the perspex does not make it run down, IMO. It contains animals and has thousands of kids abuse it every week, it’ll get scratched. And I can think of only a couple of spots where there is perspex anyway, so it is hardly an indicator of how well the zoo as a whole is maintained.

It could do with more seating and shade trees or sails though.

If it’s going to grow to 10 times its size, I do hope they will have a little train running or something for tired legs, both young and old.

Actually I think Rhinos are used to cold overnights. I froze one night in Zimbabwe, before we went looking for rhinos. We found them alive and happy, so their thick hides must be fine. The snow leopards would have loved it this morning too, they must hate the summer.

4 times its size*

Excellent. I really like the zoo, but don’t go there too often as it is a bit pokey.

Not sure if the rhinos will appreciate any mornings like we’ve had today, though.

I had been wondering when they would start that. I always thought (well, since the pine forests all burn down), that it would be a good spot for a open range type zoo – maybe one you can ride around on bikes.
