Theft in Mawson: Plants and Bird Tile

I need your help please.

Last Friday 9 July 2010, between the hours of about 10am and 4.30pm, three items were stolen from the front entrance area of my house in Mawson.

They were:

TWO PLANTS – not sure what they are called, but they have a long stem, with a large sphere of leaves at the top which were manicured to a lovely little ball

ONE MURAL BIRD TILE – mainly green in colour – was a gift – about 15cm x 30cm portrait dimensions

Have you gained a plant or two, and perhaps a tile from a so-called friend?

Have you also had anything of this nature taken recently without your consent, and perhaps know where I should start looking?

Can you help me track them down? Please? (I know, fat chance hey?)

Now I know you think, “get over it”, they are just plants and a stupid tile, but this is the first time I have been burgled, and I feel sick over it. Such an invasion of my private space etc.

Why can’t these people find a job like everyone else and work for a living, and then buy their own things?

I am very disappointed and would be most grateful if you were to check if your neighbours have suddently gained two of these plants for their front (or back?) porch, and a bird tile – chances are they are mine although I know this would be difficult to prove.

Yes, have reported this incident to police and they have written a ‘case note’.

Note to thieves: stealing is a disgrace, but stealing from the poor is unforgivable.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Kind regards

Now, plants are fairly cheaply replaced, but WHO STEALS PLANTS ….. seriously lol

Canberra is full of thieving gardners: who could forget the disgraceful performance a few years back at the post floriade rip off (they even took the top soil).
Glebe Park has almost lost all of its “Canberra Rose” section (it’s a pretty crappy rose anyway). Camellias are stollen so often that I suggested leaving out extras or “Complementary Camellias” so that some might survive to be enjoyed in public spaces.

Thank you skidbladnir.

Porkhunt, funny you say that. My pussy sits in the window most days, and would probably have seen the culprits. If only my puss could talk.

Sounds like something Mrs Slocombe would say in Are You Being Served…

Thank you toriness. I forgot to mention that my house is off street. IE you need to drive down a longish driveway to arrive at the entrance to the house. Easy target! I know it could have been a lot worse, but it was worth a try posting here on riot-act. You just never know. Some idiot may have bragged to his/her riot-act reader neighbour about what he/she “just got”. You’re right. It’s not worth the insurance claim. My sanity and my security however, have been rattled big time.

spideydog, yes, I tend to agree. The plants were gorgeous, and together with the vibrantly coloured tile, it’s probably made a nice present for someone. They left behind the geraniums and succulents though, which I’ve now confiscated myself! My front entrance is as bare as a baby’s bottom. Bloody horrible.

Plant theft is one of Canberra’s earliest traditions, and when I worked as a security guard, we had develpers who would pay us good money to watch their plantings overnight.

From ACT Stateline, Broadcast: 07/08/2009
CHRIS KIMBALL: Hopefully the new trees have a better beginning than 1926 plantings, which proved irresistible for Canberra’s early public servants.

DAVID HEADON: You had a number of people who had arrived here, they wouldn’t have been on the greatest wages and they were, you know, finding themselves with digs around suburbs like Braddon and they found that with these new shrubs going in in some of the elite area, eg: Manuka Circle, that no sooner did those plantings go in they were picked up by the citizenry and they were removed to other locations.

This wasn’t a drunkin vandalism incident, it was a “oooh, those plants are pretty and would look really nice in my garden”

Pretty sad really that these days you can’t even work hard, put a few plants in your garden without someone else wanting them more than you do

😉

if it makes you feel any better this sounds like a theft of the dare/drunken-idiot(s)-on-their-way-home variety rather than a burglary (which in my mind involves someone breaking into your house, not walking into your front yard). chances of getting them back and wouldn’t be worth (i assume) putting in an insurance claim once you’ve paid the excess. unfortunate incident but believe me it could have been a hell of a lot worse.
