There is gold in them burnt hills.

Now that our glorious leader and his blood thirsty band of eco-torrorists have singlehandely slain the beast that was Save The Ridge. It appears that their next act is to allow a new start-up mineral exploration Monaro Mining to search the surronding Canberra region for any leftover depoists of lead, zinc, tungsten, tin and gold. The Canberra Times have a spray here.

Excellent, next stop flannellette shirts, winfield blues and enough dust in the atomosphere to give Newcastle a run for its money for the title of ‘The worst to hang your washing outside this side of Chernoybl’.

Once again John Denver seems to have shown us the light…

I don’t really have an opinion on this because the idea seems too stupid to work with, I just like the thought that John Denver can still work his magic and touch people’s hearts from beyond the grave.

Breakfast at a Captain’s Flat B&B … “Would you like bacon with that?

“Yes? Then you’d better squeeeeaallll like a pig, boyyyy.”

Thumper, I’m aware of “The Flat” and its mining history. But it really is a town in disrepair at the moment.

I know mining ruined the surrounding waterways, but perhaps mining could at least inspire a bit of a revival in what has the potential to be a nice little rural town, not a backwater…

no trees near Cooma cause the Monaro is a treeless plain

Bring on the Canberra superpit and skimpys!

A giant superpit covering the entire town would be an improvement, don’t you think?

Tactical carpet bombing perhaps fro?

I don’t know if mining would help, but lord knows, Captains Flat needs something.

Even though I don’t have a lot of respect for Stanhope – how is any of this down to him? All the sites mentioned seem to be in NSW.

Besides, what’s the big problem with mining? John Denver’s singing about huge open-cut coal mining, nothing like the way the mineral desposits in question would be mined.

No idea why there’s no trees near Cooma and I bloody live there – It’s not such a bad thing doing mining, with workers propping up the economies of small towns. Michelago could become a mini Kalgoorlie – whether or not that’s a good thing is yet to be determined.

Anyone up for some John Denver?

When I was a child, my family would travel
Down to western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there’s a backwards old town that’s often remembered
So many times that my mem’ries are worn

And daddy won’t you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I’m sorry, my son, but you’re too late in asking
Mister Peabody’s coal train has hauled it away

Well sometimes we’d travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we’d shoot with pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill

And daddy won’t you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I’m sorry, my son, but you’re too late in asking
Mister Peabody’s coal train has hauled it away

And the coal company came with the world’s largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man

And daddy won’t you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I’m sorry, my son, but you’re too late in asking
Mister Peabody’s coal train has hauled it away

And daddy won’t you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I’m sorry, my son, but you’re too late in asking
Mister Peabody’s coal train has hauled it away
