The Economic Development Directorate is somewhat worryingly* in charge of the New Years Party in Civic and have sent out a media release to let us know what they’re cooking up:

Canberra is set to welcome in 2014 with state-of-the-art pyrotechnic displays and an exciting program of free entertainment in the city centre.

Adelina La Vita from Events ACT said the fireworks at 9pm and midnight were always a distinct highlight of the capital’s annual New Year’s Eve in the City celebrations.

“Audiences attending the family concert in Civic Square will have the best seats in the house to view the two fireworks shows, which will launch from City Hill and the roof of the Canberra Theatre Centre,” Ms La Vita said.

“The 9pm show will provide the perfect opportunity for families with young children to enjoy the fireworks, while late night revellers can stay on for the countdown to midnight, which promises to provide a huge adrenalin rush.”

Local pyrotechnic specialists Fireworks Australia, who have worked on concerts for stars including Pink and Kiss, have been working around the clock to design and manufacture the two spectacular displays.

“The displays will feature new patterns such as an octopus and a smiling face with winking eye, as well as fireworks inspired by dragons and even a space ship,” Ms La Vita said.

“The fireworks have also been digitally synchronised to two brilliant soundtracks featuring an exciting compilation of 2013 hits.”

The free family concert in Civic Square will feature performances from iconic Australian rock band You Am I, The Voice star Alex Gibson and local seven-piece Tuchasoul.

From 9pm, Bass in the Place will get Garema Place crowds grooving with Adelaide electronic act Uberjak’d and a great line up of local DJs.

* Why, oh why, can’t we have an Awesome Funtimes Directorate?

Does anyone know if the soundtracks are broadcast on local radio? or will they be blasted out of loud speakers near the event?

which will launch from City Hill and the roof of the Canberra Theatre Centre

Thanks for the info.

Now to got hunt down a good vantage point before the rest of the crowd…

‘La Vita Loca’.*

Or Local, anyway.

I love the use of words and phrases such as ‘grooving’ and ‘adrenalin rush’. Unforgivably, they forgot mojo, as in ‘get your mojo on.’
