They came, they sat, they left.

Today was D-Day – some 350 students and staff reportedly stormed the beaches (or rather lawns) near the Art School to stage a “sit in”. Crowding the Art School Library, they… stood around. That’s all.

The “fight” isn’t over yet though, with event the event organiser telling people:

Keep your spirits up and keep posting your ideas on the art and music school Facebook site. Meetings to plan further action and write the submission resume first day back.

Sprits up? It’s a library merger, we’re not in evacuation centres near Fukushima. For anyone though interested in contributing their ideas, you can do so here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ANU-Music-Art-School-Libraries/101631686584779

Well done to the students who organised this event. The 350 protesters are the people who actually use the libraries and recognise their value within the music and art schools and their value as resources used the broader community. To have bothered organising and attending the event, to have put effort into publicising their views on the merger, these students have demonstrated that THEY ARE NOT DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and that they do value their libraries.

lol, whatever.

Several of the people involved in this thing jump on every single bandwagon on campus without anything to do with the issue otherwise. The main organiser is neither in the Art or Music schools nor a user of the library.

It’s also worth noting that the people behind this tend to miss lectures and tutorials, hand assignments in late, get average marks at best the complain they don’t have the time to do any better… because they are busy with these issues. All this while taxpayers dollars are spent via the Commonwealth contribution allowing these people the opportunity to learn. In other words not doing what they’re there to do.

The people organising this don’t care about the libraries. If they did, they would have done the responsible, mature thing and at least gone to the Uni admins first to discuss it. Instead, they went straight to the media, kicked up a fuss and even admitted in the Canberra Times they didn’t know what ANU was actually planning yet.

Also the 350 was the estimate from event organisers right after the event. Later reports indicated it was well under 200.

wow, there wasn’t much study going on at the protest, you can see in the video it seems everyone isnt used to using a library and keeping quiet. Seemed to be more about yelling “oh i can’t seem to find some space at the library” (to the camera) than doing some genuine work

I spoke to someone who knows a bit more about the merger. Apparently they are removing ~12 art PCs and a board room (with projector), and replacing them with stacks of the music library. There wont be “practice” areas for the music kids. I could be wrong, but that’s what i got out of the discussion.

So what? It’s just doing nothing in a different place.

There’s a difference between “art” students and “arts” students.

Both work.

No they don’t!

Exactly!

Solid gold there George, well played.

Seriously though, after a quick read of some of the articles on their Facebook page, these guys are having us on if they’re trying to say they “browse” in the Library? Who “browses” a library nowdays?

I was at Uni over a decade ago now, and the fact that the library cataloge was a searchable database meant a trip in to the library was a guerrilla effort – get in, hit the target, photocopy the shit out of it (or, if feeling adventurous, borrow it), and get out.

And where are the music students who want more rehearsal space? Why haven’t they done some kind of anti-library-merger-protest protest? You know, walk into the library, crank out some Bach or Rakmaninov and really HAVE AT THEE!? eh?

$5 says no one complains CAUSE THERE’S NO ONE USING THE LIBRARY!

seriously? i haven’t stepped foot into a “bricks n mortar” uni library since 1999 doing my undergrad – and have done a masters and graduate diploma through two different universities since then. it’s called www. time for these students to embrace the 21st century.

A bunch of arts students protesting over a bunch of nothing. Gee, never saw that coming.

There are people starving and in slavery in the world, and yet we see behaviour like this.

They missed the opportunity to get Stanhope and the ACT govt to sponsor it as a “community Arts happening”.

they probably read about sit-ins from the 60s and early 70s, and thought they’d try it, but they didn’t quite understand how they worked. We need to send them an old hippie to explain it for next time.

At least they were well qualified for this action.

Imagine that, a bunch of arts students doing absolutely nothing… Good to see the education budget working hard
