Thickies catch on to Apple Store story

Back on 24 March we noted that it looked like Apple was planning to open a store of their own here in Canberra.

We even have hot word it’s what’s been driving the massive renovations on Garema Place.

But it seems the sections of the ACT media who move their lips when they read have caught on today.

Well done.

I like how they had Boost Juiced removed from their current location, and placed away from the store.

I wish my demands in life were met.

I assume TCT were paid for the cut and paste job they did from Apple’s marketing release. They even used the opportunity to plug their own app

A bit off topic but I noticed that a Nespresso store is opening up near the Bank of QLD at the Canberra Centre.

Spotted this on Twitter tonight https://twitter.com/jimibostock/status/234513539556052992

Haven’t been to th Canberra Centre for a while but going from the floor that’s in the old section?

Went into the ANU Mac 1 yesterday. They’ve really picked up their game. More staff, excellent service.

As one who has walked out of two Mac 1 stores because I couldn’t get served, this is a great leap forward. Credit where credit’s due.

Yep, and all that glitz just adds to the price.

Who (in their right mind) cares?

Samsung Galaxy 2. Accept no substitutes. Well, except for the Galaxy 3…:-)

Chud!

It is fairly obvious that there is a lot of money to be parted from fashion conscious fools – other wise Belco mall would not be thriving as it is.

Fixed.

Really no need for a apple store. Applestore app is the same price you will pay and ships in two or three days.

Unless you have a problem with your device. Then you either have to travel to an Apple Store (nearest are Sydney or Melbourne) or post your device away and be without it for a period of time.

Resellers won’t fix them for you.

Depends on the reseller I guess.

If you’ve got a spare month, Mac1 will handle warranty repairs for you.

But I can’t imagine JB Hi-Fi giving a toss. That said if your Samsung telly crapped its pants JB wouldn’t fix that either.

I may be missing some sarcasm here, but equating the Belconnen mall with fashion seems a bit apples and mouldy oranges to me. I’m a total dag, but even I know that that mall is not ‘fashionable’.

I don’t think that’s strictly true. You can’t just walk into a reseller, but if you have called Apple support, you can be referred to a local reseller for help. I imagine the reseller probably gets compensated by Apple for providing the service in places where Apple doesn’t have their own presence.

Apple Store won’t fix it for you on the spot either. They might do you a replacement, but otherwise you’re in the same position.

.. and the Applestore app being a replacement for a physical store where you can get a hands-on with the product before you buy? Nice try.

Why would you need a hands on? You already know what you are getting.

Don’t Apple Stores mostly (or all?) have street frontage? Hard to camp out inside the Canberra Centre…

I am pretty sure all Apple Stores in Victoria are in shopping centres.

Problems with an Apple device? Lies. They “just work”.

Heard last week from employees of Fossil in the Canberra Centre (now closed) that Apple’s going where Esprit used to be on the top level. I’ll throw it out there as a rumour – but personally I doubt it. Don’t Apple Stores mostly (or all?) have street frontage? Hard to camp out inside the Canberra Centre…

Not really. There were modest numbers outside Telstra and Optus when the iPhone 4 was released.

That made me laugh out loud. Nicely described!

I would say top floor Canberra Centre. There’s almost more black boarded up shops there than actual trading shops. The forcing out of Trenery and the expansion of that area into the carpark would give a nice big shop front for them. Alternatively, there’s some extensive work done on the former large esprit shop opposite boost, and they definitely don’t want people to know what’s going in there because there’s a plastic sheet behind the box to stop prying eyes.

Rumour has it that Trenery, Diana Ferrari & Cotton On are being forced out to make way for a two-level Zara http://thecanberran.com/2012/07/05/the-apple-store/

Civic. For sure.

Speaking of other media following RA, I was amused to hear 666 this morning saying, “umm Riotact had a story about getting rid of cats and TAMS not being helpful, and yes cats can be bad, so we tried to speak to TAMS but no one would speak to us, but here’s Michael Linke from the RSPCA…”

Nice to see RA setting the agenda of other mainstream media outlets in Canberra, you’ve come a long way guys!

The facade and the need for a large glass shop front rules Garema court out. They’re not making those sorts of changes to it in the building work going on. Unless Westfield kick a major tenant out of Belconnen very soon, there’s no room for Apple there..

My information from an Apple insider is the location and opening date is yet to be confirmed.

Northside would make sense though.

The Southside demographic offers limited growth and an ageing population.
Civic would be okay, but already has a high concentration of authorised Apple resellers. It would also be an idea location for a flagship store while I think the current plan is for a suburban store. Northside offers growth potential and a desirable demographic.

.

I’ve got news for you c_c, Apple don’t give a damn if there are already resellers in the area they plan to build a store. They put a store there, business increases, and they get all the profits, no need to share with a pesky reseller. You only have to look at the amount of people that flock to Apple stores compared to resellers.
Apple operate on a crush, kill, destroy business model, they have showed this time and time again.

Also, $10 on The Canberra Centre 😉

No way it will be in the AGL Building in Garema Place, Apple has strict guidelines about the front appearance of buildings. The set back of the store fronts from the building columns would immediately rule it out. They are building another store at present where heritage listed awnings above the windows are too much for their design folks to keep.

The construction in Garema Place is Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport gradually moving into the Garema Court building. I think there is cafe going in on the ground floor.

Not Garema Place. Not the Canberra Centre, but Westfield Belconnen. That from an Apple executive at a recent function in Sydney

I guess we’ll all know for sure come opening day!
