It’s the last week of school holidays which means it’s also the last week of Canberra’s winter festival! Skate at the rink in Civic Square, grab a hot chocolate by the fireplaces, watch ice sculptures come to life like it’s a scene from Frozen, and check out the festival offers from surrounding local businesses, including SuperEmoji and Braddon Flowers.

Canberra Symphony Orchestra plays Handel’s Messiah

When: 7:30 pm, Friday 8 July; 7:30 pm, Saturday 9 July
Where: Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music, Acton

The world’s most-performed work of classical music was written in just under a month by George Frideric Handel, and while it’s traditionally performed around Christmas, Canberra Symphony Orchestra couldn’t wait. Neither can we.

Fireside Festival VIP Launch and Meet the Winemaker

You mightn’t be loving Canberra’s weather at the moment, but it’s responsible for some of the region’s beautiful winter wines. Kick back in the warm and wood-panelled QT and taste 10 of them this Friday for the launch of the Fireside Festival.

A Pooch Affair: A day out with your dog and friends at EPIC

Who says humans need to have all the fun on the weekend? Billing itself as a “boutique indoor dog event”, the Great Gatsby-themed A Pooch Affair will put on a retail mall, fashion walk, ball pit, giveaways, Insta-photo ops and more for Canberra’s dogs and dog owners.

Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow

When: 9 July 2022, 8 pm
Where: Canberra Theatre Centre
How much: $55.85.

Australia’s biggest comedy festival hits the road to Canberra this week with comedians Sam Taunton, Bronwyn Kuss, Cameron James, Lizzy Hoo and Takashi Wakasugi putting on a wild night of song and satire.

360 Market: retro, vintage, and recycled fashion

Shakespeare to Winehouse: portraits from London’s National Portrait Gallery

London’s Portrait Gallery has some of the world’s most recognisable portraits – from Nelson Mandela to Queen Elizabeth I. It’s also thousands of kilometres away – but this week, over 80 of its treasures will be on display at Canberra’s own Portrait Gallery.

Story + Party: True Dating Stories

Date vicariously and precariously this Wednesday night at The Street Theatre through real-life dating stories that’ll make you laugh – just as much as be grateful your last date didn’t blow their nose on the tablecloth. Story + Party has played in 65 other countries. Now it’s Canberra’s turn.

Seeing the picture of the ice skaters makes me ask what’s happening with the long promised new Tuggeranong ice rink. Even ACT ice sports that made big claims about the project has gone very quiet for months.

“In Budget Estimates on Friday (29 October), Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry said she was excited by how the project was currently tracking.”

Dare I say, refer “Still no supplier for long-promised upgrades to ACT’s public transport ticketing system” for your answer? 😉
