Just in from our friends at the ABC:

1. North West of Eden – the electorate of Eden Monaro and its often outspoken, sometimes eccentric, electors are profiled by James Glenday – in the proverbial litmus test for the Federal election.

2. Koala Comeback – Koalas are making a comeback in the Cooma to Canberra region. Meet a pair of them and the people who’ve bought a forest to keep them safe.

3. Botanic Bus Tour – the Gardens are looking for new volunteers and one of them shares his passion, remembering the site when it used to Canberra’s car dump – now covered in mists and mellow fruitfulness. ( Keats )

4. Sub-Cultural Canberra – from train collectors and fire twirlers to seniors’ dances and wild bush raves – through the eyes of artist Caitlin Welch.

5. Another Canberra Birthday – a story from the archives about the opening of Signadou in Watson ( 1963)

6. Closer- James Vyver’s pictures of Canberra from up up and away in his beautiful balloon.

It’s interesting that the weekly version of 7.30 for the town which is the political capital of Australia is generally so apolitical – almost studiously so. Last Friday’s story about Eden Monaro was obviously about politics, but was handled in a very low-key way. The contrast with the heavy political content in the national 7.30 (and in what I recall of NSW Stateline) is quite stark and, on the whole, preferable – I would generally rather have news magazine style stories than interviewers asking gotcha questions and politicians providing blatantly evasive answers. That said, a few more reports, particularly of the investigative nature, on major issues facing the town, would be welcome.

I watch it – or at least try to as it does clash with the bed time routine for the youngest in the house on a friday when our schedule gets a bit slack. I’ve always found it pretty informative, highlighting some sometimes controversial issues. I also thought that this week the footage at the end really highlighted how beautiful a city Canberra is and how luck we are.

What time do you suggest it be on? Do you watch the 7.30 Report ordinarily?

Canberra is an amazing city in so many ways (unless you join the chorus of culturally-programmed programmed bashers). Nonetheless, 7:30 ACT does the city no favours. How many people actually watch it (and how many of those have just kept the television on after the news)?
