This week on 7.30 ACT

It’s interesting that the weekly version of 7.30 for the town which is the political capital of Australia is generally so apolitical – almost studiously so. Last Friday’s story about Eden Monaro was obviously about politics, but was handled in a very low-key way. The contrast with the heavy political content in the national 7.30 (and in what I recall of NSW Stateline) is quite stark and, on the whole, preferable – I would generally rather have news magazine style stories than interviewers asking gotcha questions and politicians providing blatantly evasive answers. That said, a few more reports, particularly of the investigative nature, on major issues facing the town, would be welcome.

I watch it – or at least try to as it does clash with the bed time routine for the youngest in the house on a friday when our schedule gets a bit slack. I’ve always found it pretty informative, highlighting some sometimes controversial issues. I also thought that this week the footage at the end really highlighted how beautiful a city Canberra is and how luck we are.

Canberra is an amazing city in so many ways (unless you join the chorus of culturally-programmed programmed bashers). Nonetheless, 7:30 ACT does the city no favours. How many people actually watch it (and how many of those have just kept the television on after the news)?
