This just in from our friends at the ABC:

1. The Oaks

Oaks Estate – lying as it does on the border of Queanbeyan and the ACT – is the site of the latest cross-border brawl.

On the heels of the fraught Tralee development, residents are up in arms over a rezoning that could lead to industrial development on their doorstep.

2. Cate’s Indian Summer

Malcolm McGregor – is a serving army officer, a speech writer and a former political staffer.

Now he is writing about cricket – with a new book just published – “An Indian Summer of cricket”.

Whilst writing that book, the author made some dramatic changes in her own life – and now lives as Catherine. The army has given her amazing support and the army chief Lt Col David Morrison says “she is my mate. I don’t care that the person I used to know as Mal looks different. I do care, and deeply, about her well-being.”

An exclusive television interview about childhood summers, heroes and cricket, the army – and becoming Catherine.

3. The year in review – in brief

After seeing the story on Malcolm (Cate) McGregor, all I hope is that the hormones kick in pretty soon. (S)he sounds like Pavarotti and looks like a bloke wearing lipstick. Bad interviewing because at no point was (s)he asked whether she’s had the operation yet, hence the reason I have to call her (s)he in this post.

In regards to gender identity and biological sex, society generally expects everyone to be a masculine male or feminine female. But this is only a social expectation, as nature has always delivered plenty of people who have never fitted this binary. Instead there is a spectrum between the binary, and nature has always delivered people who are on this, in regards to gender identity or biological sex.

Nature loves diversity, but society hates difference.

I’m certain the reason you had to “call her (s)he” was so you could display how incredibly insensitive and ignorant you are.

It worked.

The border really ought to be redrawn so Oaks Estate is in NSW rather than the ACT. The present situation is just a mess as the ACT government truly doesn’t give a damn about Oaks Estate and the Queanbeyan council and NSW government have no electoral incentive to take the welfare of residents into account in their own decisions, despite the place physically being part of Queanbeyan and not Canberra.

great stories to finish the year

More bemused than up in arms and left wondering when ‘tit tat’ politics, become focused on real shared community outcomes.

Following a meeting Mayor Overall has said …”personally I don’t support this ‘planning’ decision” though hasnt been able to clarify why the equivalent land fronting (queanbeyan) Henderson Rd. is zoned community, recreational – the land fronting (ACT) Railway St. – industrial.

And before the whiff of misrepresentation…Queanbeyans strategic planners in the LEP point out that under Special Purpose zoning the land is redundant…industrial zoning simply means intensive development resulting from poor planning.

We look forward to how Mayor Overall resolves the idea of Heritage, open space and intensive industrial development.
