Those brick walls in the parks. Just what are they for?

brick thing

So, these things pictured; they’re verminous throughout inner Canberra.

And yet what are they for?

Surely not just as a canvas for street art?

Whatever they were built for in the long long ago seems to have passed from fashion.

And yet they remain.

Your thoughts, dear readers, are as ever appreciated.

I thought they were for solitary tennis.

And I kind of assumed for squash, but in 30ish years hanging around in Canberra I’VE NEVER SEEM THEM BE USED AS ANYTHING BUT A WHOLY INADEQUATE SHELTER FOR UNDERAGE SEX!!!!!

NFI, but they would be perfect to make into those public urinals that you see in Europe (not sure if you have them anywhere in Oz).

Maybe they lie there in the vain hope that vandals will expend their efforts on these all-too-convenient canvasses and leave actual walls, fences and buildings alone?

And that’s why Australia is so bad at tennis these days.

Although I think we’re quite good at squash, strangely.

+1.

There used to be two of these walls next to the tennis courts at Haig Park in Turner. I spent many hours as a youngster in front of one of them (the closest to the courts themselves). It had a surface similar to the tennis courts and was used by a lot of people in the area. The other wall had grass growing over the playing area making it difficult to play solo – and so was rarely used.

There were similar walls at the back of the ovals at Kaleen High. Rarely used for tennis, but provided excellent cover for smoking all kinds of things during school hours.

In fact the one pictured is from the Haig Park pair.

The wall at the tennis courts in Reid gets used…

It’s for kicking a soccer ball against.

For anything that you can practice bouncing a ball off of a wall for: Soccer, cricket, tennis, baseball, softball, volleyball… the list goes on. For tennis you would expect the wall to be attached to the end of a court so the ball wouldn’t bounce around unpredictably.

Yes – they are hitting walls for tennis practice. Excepting the dead of winter (i.e the next couple of weeks) there are always solo tennis players practicing on those particular walls almost every weekend.
Any other residents willing to get together and paint over the foul graffitti? (I notice the Turner Tennis Club practice walls have some expletives painted on them that would be fun to remove)

Football/Soccer. Probably some of the best practice techniques for young kids playing soccer is to kick a ball against a wall and work on them.

Yep, or handball.

I’ve seen kids use them to kick a soccer ball against.

I’ve also seen them use them for a strange form of brandy in which a few kids stand against the wall and the other kids peg tennis balls at them.

Are you angered by the public sex, or by the fact that it is not adequately protected from the elements?
