Thoughts on Cafe Gaudi.

Well, I just had a Vanilla Slice from Cafe Gaudi. They’re usually quite nice and made by some private baker. The thing I’ve noticed about them is they leave the old stock on the cake shelves for too long. Today the shelf was full so I thought they’d be nice. I’d got back to work and opened the wrapping to a dried, near fungus infected piece of crusty puss filled pastry. I brave taken a slight nibble on it. It didn’t taste bad as such, just dried out and stale. It was promptly binned and it’s definitely not worth ever buying from their again.

On a positive note about them though, I really think they have some of the best coffee you can buy in the region, and they’re baristas (in most cases badly trained noobs) do a fairly consistent job at preparing them. Coffee Guru and Gloria Jean’s can be just down right bitter and indrinkable. The problem is you need to pick your times if you want a take away coffee at Gaudi. Even with the new fandangled computer ordering system, some of the staff are just plain useless at time management. There was a really nice dude named Samuel who worked there. Many times he had the coffee ready to go before I’d even ordered. He’s by far the best staff member they ever had, but he’s unfortunately gone now.

If you want the best vanilla slice in existence (except for maybe europe), go to Sorrento on the far southern eastern point of Port Phillip Bay. By golly gee they’re fine, made fresh on site. You can’t miss them, they’re on the left as you drive into town coming from Mornington with a big sign stating that they’re the home of the famous BEST vanilla slice in Australia. They make them onsite and they’re utterly fantastic.

Yeah Woody, I concur 🙂
I would love the recipe.

*lol*

Well, I did find a version of the Australian Women’s Weekly vanilla slice recipe, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the original since it was in ounces!

Now I have a very soft spot indeed for ounces, having grown up with them when I was a lass, but one has to be suspicious as to the originality of any such recipe when it clearly has already been altered. Who knows what else may have been lost in translation? What secret ingredient may once have been public knowledge?

One might also have to be too darn lazy to do all the conversions back again, if one were lazy, hypothetically!

So do post it please, Woody, yes! However, I’d much rather hear about the game with the Sao bickies ….

a duck saw some coffee once.

I don’t approve of coffee threads unless both chicks are hot.

Should have read…

Maybe he meant that the posts are “bright or showy: [gay colors; gay ornaments]”??

Care to rethink that comment, barking toad? Or perhaps explain why something you don’t like is “homosexual”?

No, Granny – you’re thinking of a game you may have seen at school as a lass >;)

I can post the recipe if anybody wants it.

Ooh, my friend Google has told me that there is a vanilla slice blog!

The original Woman’s Weekly recipe is best. Mmm, passionfruit icing.

Does that one use Sao’s too?

The original Woman’s Weekly recipe is best. Mmm, passionfruit icing.

No, sorry, but from memory it was pretty basic, Sao on the bottom, custard in the middle, Sao on top, icing over all and in the fridge to set. I’ll ask next time we talk.

where can you get a good old fashioned pineapple doughnut? my lime cordial just isn’t complete…

I had a pretty good pineapple glazed doughnut From Fantasy Donuts (outside Big W in Woden Plaza) about 18 months ago. Can’t vouch for them now, but the one I had was pretty good. Don’t know about lime cordial though, mine’s a caramel thickshake … mmmmm

Or a good old fashioned pineapple juice, for that matter!

: D

Do you have the recipe?

Granny @#23 So did my big sister, ande they were definitely good. She also made bloody good cornish pasties.

BT @#27 +1 Go ‘Pies

What this needs is a cartoon assigned to it.

I don’t mind the occasional vanilla slice, although I tend to veer toward the savoury items, pies and stuff.

Vanilla Slice, Slice Baby…

Steve I suggest you contact me if you have an issue here rather than rabbit on.

In regards to the poor effort in Canberra, did you give the place in question reasonable chance for recourse before coming here?

I suspect that they’re all grown-ups at Gafe Gaudi Danman. If they take money from a customer for a product it’s up to them to be damn sure what they’re selling is about as good as they can make it – not at some point down the track IF the customer comes back. I don’t subscribe to the need to give any business a second chance. Whether or not they’d happily seek to fix the problem or not.

Hand holding and nannying substandard businesses simply distorts the market, allowing them to continue in business longer than the might otherwise deserve.

I retract my Worst Post Ever proclamation, and apologise for the snot block comment, although that’s what the humble vanilla slice is affectionately known as in Victoria (google will comfirm this). This post has now soared ahead of the chewed up dictaphone post in the interesting stakes, and climbing.

Steveski74 had the decency to explain his thread was posted in error and later asked for it to be deleted.

Most “where can I buy a cup of coffee” threads are posted on purpose. And expect serious answers – which is gay.

And now for something completely different – Collingwood will smack Richmond and it’s allegedly drug free cuz tonight by 5 goals. It wont’t be viewed with coffee and slice either. Just beer and chilli pizza. Then port and bourbon.

It is definitely not the worst post ever ….

I haven’t been reading RA the whole time, so can’t really comment on the worst post ever. The case of the missing mobile post by amber / em was pretty bad, though!

Sorrento vanilla slice is best done after fish and chips from the chip-o next door.

Done both on the way home from Daysleford (The long way via Ballarat)

In regards to the poor effort in Canberra, did you give the place in question reasonable chance for recourse before coming here ?

You know, for the “worst post ever” this is getting a lot of reads 😉

My friend’s mum used to make them out of Sao biscuits. You wouldn’t think it, but they were pretty amazing.

Sorrento is always worth a visit even without vanilla slices, however pick me up one from Sorrento while you’re there!

Or you could just make your own…… even cheating and using pre-made pastry leads to a better result than the average shop-bought one.

Present this URL for a free Vanilla slice at Sorrento.

No Granny I’m Steve, a geek software dude at a govt org.
I guess this way, my disdain for their food now will be more widely known.
I just didn’t want to drag people into the discussion with a badly placed post.

Oh the woe, the pain of my consequences of my actions. Maybe I should head to Sorrento to help ease my burden. OhhhH!!!

She’s a vanilla slice of heaven even!

Vanilla slice slice baby.
Under pressure, and cut with a Bowie knife, it’s fit for a wigga Queen.

LOL

Steveski74, I hope you’re not really Greg from Ragless Circuit, Kambah ….

: /

However, a vanilla slice is always tempting and practically impossible to refuse -if it’s not an impostor that is!

Curse you, vanilla slice, for thou hast rooned me!

[that bit was for Trevar]

Fark, I’ve truly created a monster here *blush*.

How about my place, I have a good recipe 😉

Eww, “pretending” to be a vanilla slice? That’s worse than mine, the one I had wasn’t exhibiting autonomy. That’s truly festy.

Oh Trevar, I would definitely nominate you for the Oscar on that one!

*chuckle*

Funny! There is nothing funny about Vanilla Slice!

Kingdoms rise and fall on the quality of their custard and pastry production!

I think that’s kind of funny, steveski74! And vanilla slices are an important element of the Australian culture!

I had something pretending to be a vanilla slice the other day from a local bakery. It wasn’t bad so much as just disappointing and not the way one would expect a vanilla slice to be.

I would love to know where I can find a good one, but preferably locally if such a place exists.

Best comments from article author ever…

🙂

Damn people are still replying 🙂

Actually this topic should be deleted.

The Great and Powerful Vanilla Slice is a worthy topic, but I don’t know about the exemplar from Sorrento. I do know that the best Vanilla Slice I’ve ever had was from a bakery in Leongatha, Victoria. Perhaps connoisseurs of these delectable delicacies should merely assume that the best of them are to be had in Gippsland?

Snot block indeed! You philistine!

Snot block?
I used to enjoy Vanilla slice, but now I’ll never be able to eat another one. 🙁

Sorry, i hadn’t intended on this being a whole post in itself.

I wasn’t logged in on the browser tab I wanted to leave a comment on and just click Post Item. I apologise for my ineptitude.

well, we do need a new “crap restaurants” topic, as the old one has done that weird thing where you can’t read the original article, and only people with special browers can post on it.

and it would be nice to know where to get a decent vanilla slice. I can tell you, there’s NONE here in the US.

Sorrento is 100km from Melbourne. My bad. I stand by the rest of my above post.

I’ll be damned if I’m gonna travel to the outskirts of Melbourne for a snot block. Worst post ever.

I don’t usually mind these good/bad places to eat/drink threads johnboy…but commentary on vanilla slice???
