It takes persistence, talent, humour and intelligence to be a success in the radio industry, and the current weekend breakfast team at HIT104.7 are no exception.
Ellie Mobbs, Bryce Ruthven and Jason Roses are all accomplished broadcasters in their own right, and it has taken many years of study, work and tenacity to accomplish the lighthearted weekend breakfast show.
Ellie has been in radio for 15 years and is well-known for her representation of Endometriosis Australia. Jason revealed (almost) everything during a stint in the Big Brother house, and Bryce was popular in his role on Home and Away. Ellie Mobbs and Jason Roses have been doing the show on Saturdays and Sundays for the past two years, and were recently joined by Bryce Ruthven.
While the show they broadcast together has humour, and sounds like a conversation between three mates from different backgrounds, it represents years of on-air experience and academic study.
“We like to make sure people are having a good time,” said Jason. “We all love it. We love coming into the studio every day and doing interviews with national and international artists, but making sure we connect with events and charities around Canberra, giving a shout out to people,” he said.
Roses, though, is a serious broadcaster and spends much more time researching his interviews outside showtime, as do Ruthven and Mobbs.
Ellie Mobbs’ career as a professional broadcaster has gone from strength to strength after studying Commercial Radio at Swinburne University of Technology. She began working as a breakfast announcer in 2005 for Snow FM and has been in radio since she was 16. It’s always been her dream to work in radio.
“I loved the idea of being on-air. I used to listen religiously to radio and write down everything they said,” said Ellie. “My first job was volunteering at FM104.7 and MIX106.3 but my first full-time gig was at Snow FM.”
Ellie moved to Perth when she got the call from Austereo to be a breakfast announcer, then to Sydney to be on 2DayFM. She’s now been in radio for 15 years.
“I’m passionate about radio, and especially local radio,” said Ellie, “and that it’s easy to call up an announcer, and tell us there’s an accident, or giving a shout out to the local sporting team. It’s live and it’s fast so we can get things happening really quickly on the ground.”
Jason Roses has tertiary qualifications in Business Management, and he is a highly savvy business operator in addition to his media career.
“I built a business from the ground up and then I sold it once I had thirty or so people working for me. I’m not going to do that again,” he laughed.
“I have a very real passion for broadcasting, since joining the radio family, and I love working in the studio.”
Bryce Ruthven is a graduate of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, and years of hard graft, working as a ground announcer for the Melbourne Victory and as a Master of Ceremonies, with his radio career starting in north Queensland, where he’d moved to be a professional soccer player. He has an Australian Commercial Radio Award and a long list of finalist mentions. His passion is playing soccer and AFL, and in the short time he’s been in Canberra, has joined clubs and plays both, fully embracing his local sporting clubs.
“I’m playing footy for Ainslie and soccer for Weston Molonglo on weekends,” said Ruthven, “and I’m on-air during the week as well in the afternoons.”
All three hosts encourage the community to reach out to the station if they want to share a story, or raise awareness of an event or a non-profit cause.
“If someone wants to reach out through social media we can get them on the air, let us know if you have an event going on, or if you’re trying to raise money for a cause, we can help,” said Jason.
