ACT Policing is investigating whether a car that struck three officers at the National Arboretum this afternoon was driven at them deliberately.

At about 2:50 pm today (11 July), the three officers were conducting a routine traffic stop of a vehicle on Forest Drive, Molonglo Valley, when a green Ford sedan hit them on the side of the road.

One officer suffered a broken leg, one a back injury and another a shoulder injury.

The injured officers received treatment from ACT Ambulance Service paramedics at the scene. They were then taken to hospital for further treatment.

Superintendent Corey Heldon said the incident would be thoroughly investigated. She reminded the community that driving a vehicle at any person was a serious offence.

“We are investigating whether the driver deliberately drove at police,” Superintendent Heldon said.

“Police being deliberately injured while they are doing their job is never acceptable.

“I am thankful these three officers are alive; however, one of them is seriously injured. The consequences of this incident could easily have been much worse.

“I ask anyone who saw this incident who has not spoken to police to do so as soon as possible, in order to enable us to fully investigate the circumstances.”

The driver of the Ford is in custody and is assisting police with enquiries.
