The ABC has joined other local media in getting star struck by NASA administrator Charles Bowden’s visit to check out works at Tidbinbilla’s Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex.

Don’t get me wrong what they do out there is truly amazing and well worth a visit if you haven’t been.

But they’ve been at it for 60 odd years now.

It’s nice that the local team will be handling the Mars rover landing. But it’s not a matter of winning anything, it’s just where the turning of the earth will take them at landing time.

As for the construction of new dishes. Gosh, was that announced in 2010? I think it was.

But while we’re here, why not take a look at the lovely photo Geoff from Lushpup Images sent us last year?

I thought the NASA yank was in fact the head of NASA? Pretty newsworthy.

Yep – Head of Nasa, a former navy test pilot and an astronaut. He certainly packed out the lecture theatre his talk was held at.

Perhaps the journo’s just never seen that movie ‘The Dish’?

While he was here he gave a talk at ANU which while lite-on science wise, was interesting and entertaining. He went out of his way to engage with the children in the audience, and encouraged them to study hard, work hard and have faith that they can achieve.

Sadly i wasn’t able to ask the question I wanted to ask which is ‘Can you smoke cigarettes on the space shuttle?’

Yeah, I was kinda scratching my head about that ‘announcement’.
Love the photo!

I’m looking forward to Lapland annoucning that they’ve won the rights to viewing Aurora Borealis. Or towns on the equator winning the right to year-long warm weather.
