Tim Ferguson, with his cane, cuts the ribbon at the site of past glories

We mentioned yesterday that Tim Ferguson of long ago Doug Anthony All Stars fame was coming to observe the plaque honouring that band on City Walk.

Overheard has kindly sent in a picture of the event and media pack.

What’s Your opinion?

Great to see him back in Canberra.

Agreed.

And I have to confess I absolutely loved, ‘Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush’.

Funny you should mention Toothbrush. Channel Nine brought Tim over from the ABC, signed his contract, organised the film crew and everything and the program was meant to replace Hey Hey It’s Saturday. Darryl Somers said “Don’t Forget Our Contracts” so Hey Hey was left alone and Toothbrush was shown on Thursday night where it bombed in the ratings and only lasted one series.

Interestingly a few years later Channel Nine tried to do the same thing with another Canberra boy – Mick Molloy – but Somers arced up again and Mick was relegated to a later timeslot on Saturday night. That show also lasted just one series.

The contracts of Daryl Somers and the rest of the Hey Hey crew finally ran out in 1999 and Channel Nine was then able to axe the show.

Ah! The truth emerged on Friday as to why the leadup to the ACT election was chosen as the timing for Tim Ferguson to be flown up to Canberra at ACT Government expense to inexplicably cut a ribbon for a plaque eulogising the Doug Anthony Allstars (when he will be here in mid October anyway to do a show).
Turns out that Tim Ferguson’s visit has just been a vehicle for a cutesie-poo Katie Gallagher puff-piece featured on ACT 7.30. Shame, Chris Kimball!
Turns out that Tim Ferguson and Katie Gallagher had crushes on each other way back when, on a bus. Awwwwwwww.
How much did it cost to fly Ferguson up from Melbourne and have him here in a hotel for several days? Was the Katie Gallagher-Tim Ferguson interview during the caretaker period? If so, did ACT Labor, rather than the ACT Government, pay? There is NO justification for the timing of this 7.30 piece.
Katie Gallagher, I don’t think the ACT electorate is in the mood to see your 30-year-old Melrose High teenage love-angst used as a campaign strategy.

It was certainly an awkward segment but i think you might be reading too much into it.

Katter getting one of his recruits Steven Bailey onto the vox pop segment was stranger still IMHO.

I used to watch them in civic too. And I cant believe its been that long since they decided to call it a day. Im glad I saw one of their last performances at UC as well.

God I feel old.

But we still have Youtube. And Gud. And myriad TV presences of Paul McD. And Richard Fidler on the Conversation Hour on ABC radio right now — Google it — not sure which brand it is. Maybe ABC metrop online. I know it’s Illawarra 97.3FM and they stream for starters but not sure of where else on a radio.

And I have to confess I absolutely loved, ‘Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush’.

Tim has MS?

Big battle ahead 🙁

I wish him all the best.

My understanding is that the early signs of MS were one of the main reasons why DAAS broke up (in 1994 – eighteen years ago – I feel old too) – he wasn’t up to their intense touring schedule any more or to performing any choreography. He’s apparently had MS Symptoms since he was 19.

I think this show of his on Friday 19 October will be a cracker. Part life story, part therapy, part pisstaké, part gag-fest. Won’t be in town then, but I reckon if you half a mind to be there, that’s more than enough.

Disclaimer: Overheard Productions was just walking past and took some pics. We don’t have any dibs or interest or publicity involvement with this show.

I saw you wave when I was walking back through later and thinking, “I know you. I definitely know you. And I know that handle too. But I gots nothing!” I was on the way to Australia Post to untangle one mother of a financial snafu — banks with only one branch in the whole town really are just asking for the tears to flow! But this event was distracting enough to take a few minutes out.

I don’t know what rock I’ve been hiding under, but I didn’t realise Tim had MS.

The body might be a little shaky, but that mind is as sharp as ever. Funny, funny guy. And I was able to give him some reassurance (as I once found out in a professional capacity) that Katie G does appreciate it when you ask the question and pronounce her name correctly. (Tim had met the Chiefly Ministerial earlier in the day.)

I think I have been under the same rock, the news of his MS is sad..he is s vibrant talent.I recall during my uni days wandering down to Woodstock with friends for beer and pizza on a Friday night and when we wandered out a couple of hours later there was DAAS doing their act- they def stood out from the crowd!…Ahhh memories..

I remember watching those guys in Civic – particularly liked it when they’d use the rubbish bins as part of the act 🙂

Thanks for that Overheard. I am the sexy man on the left next to the even sexier man doing the ribbon cutting.
