It’s been a long year for all of us but possibly more so for our university students who would normally have their days filled with groups of their like-minded peers at lectures and tutorials, at cafes and bars and enjoying sport of every type. University life is rich and full of exciting experiences but not this year.
In an effort to shine some light at the end of an isolated year, Kambri at ANU has launched their Here I Am festival and is hosting a hackathon, ArtHack, to unite students across departments, across the country and the globe, to empower female artists and creatives, get their creative minds buzzing, learn some new skills and maybe come up with a career-launching idea.
Hackathons are a gathering of minds to collaborate and workshop any topic and at the finish, pitch the ideas to a group of judges shark tank-style (but without the brutality).
Founder and CEO of Openhack 2020 Australia Monika Lionaite says the focus of ArtHack hosted by Kambri is to encourage female participation in arts and technology by creating a safe space to make their artistic dreams a reality.
“This will be a gathering of minds for creatives in art, tech, architecture, science and business to get together in a space where they will be encouraged to be proactive when thinking about their careers, learn to believe in their ideas and gain self-confidence in presenting those ideas,” Monika explained.
Arthack will run for 24 hours, from 11:00 am on 27 November 27 to 11:00 am the next day. During the hackathon, participants will join workshops and collaborative sessions, brainstorm ideas, learn about building ideas into a tangible product and be coached how to pitch their ideas to the business world.
As intimidating as it might sound, Monika says it is adrenaline-inducing.
“As the time ticks by and people start to get really tired, that is often when the best ideas start to happen. This is a marathon after all.”
Monika says Arthack will be a welcoming space for students from any discipline, meals will be provided for the participants who can go home between 12:00 am and 6:00 am if they wish.
“By 11:00 am the next day all the ideas will be pitched and we will have a winner.
“The aim is to encourage students to come together physically and online and solve the current challenges in the arts and creative industries. We hope to bring diverse changemakers together to empower females, creatives and artists during this global pandemic. And, it is a great way for students to relax with creative discussions after the exam sessions,” Monika said.
Monika hopes the event proves to be a source of inspiration to the participants and all engaged parties.
“We encourage diversity, all ANU students are welcome to participate physically and others who are interested can join the hackathon online,” she said.
Participation is free and ArtHack invites ANU students and Canberra-based professionals and creatives with an interest in innovation, arts and technology to come to the physical venue based in Kambri. Online attendees can tune in from anywhere in the world. Canberra GMT+ time zone will be followed with the start at 11:00 am on 27 November for 24 hours.
