Territory And Municipal Services have announced that Tiny’s Green Shed has won the bid to operate the re-usable facility at the Mitchell tip.

“Tiny’s Green Shed has been operating with great success at the Mugga Lane Reusables Facility since January 2010 so I am pleased to announce they will soon be open for sales at Mitchell,” Senior Manager, ACT NOWaste, Chris Ware said.

“Tiny’s Green Shed has been awarded the contract for the Mitchell Reusables Facility following a public tender process. Reusable facilities help Canberrans recycle more by allowing them to drop off unwanted items before taking the rest of their waste to landfill.

“Since commencing operations at Mugga Lane, Tiny’s Green Shed has accepted and sold tens of thousands of items for reuse including books, lounges, tables, chairs, bikes, clothing, furniture, building materials, gardening items and sporting equipment. In 2010/11 it recovered nearly 1300 tonnes of material that would otherwise have gone to landfill.”

Mr Ware said that the Mitchell reuse facility will be closed for sales for two weeks from Friday 14 October 2011 to Friday 28 October 2011 to allow for renovations and site improvements.

Personally, being fundamentally childish, I’ll miss being able to announce to friends that I’m off to the arse shop. But I’m sure I’ll get over it.

The Green Shed isn’t the only option anymore.

The ACT Tender Centre has opened in Mitchell recently, the silent auction process allows for non-competitive bidding against items with seller reserve process displayed.

Items can be left for up to four auction cycles at no cost to the seller of not sold. The commission on sold items is 20%….that’s 80% return to the seller who might alternatively given the product away for others to profit from.

You won’t be uncertain of the price you would pay, bidding forms openly state the surcharge to the bidder on “won” items. 11% + $2 processing fee.

Look ACT Tender Centre up on Facebook.

Agree, Yay!

However, it seems to me that we have gone from (at least) 3 operators to just the one, is this the best option for the long run?

I guess we will see.

Well it worked just fine with local community group Revolve for many years until a bunch of bureaucrats stuck their noses in, kicked Revolve out and gave the contracts to the infamous Aussie Junk from the Gold Coast. Tiny’s has managed to get Mugga Lane almost back to what it used to be under Revolve (without Better Bits and the bikes out back) but since the ACT government ruthlessly destroyed Revolve, Tiny’s Green Shed is the best option we have.

Yay! The other bunch that have been operating at Mitchell charge like a wounded bull. We have sourced many bargain items from Tiny’s in Mugga Lane (and we were fans of the late Revolve).
