Todd Carney the player of the year?

The SMH has Raider’s skipper Alan Tongue’s view on former enfant terrible Todd Carney and the very real possibility that he will win the Dally M Medal tonight as the best player of the year in the NRL.

In his lengthy stay in Canberra the Goulburn native was famous for speeding, drink driving, going on the run from the law, property damage, getting into stinks, on one famous occasion weeing on a man’s head in All Bar Nun, and finally being formally exiled from Goulburn. He was even immortalised in song (above) by our own Thumper.

But it seems a stint playing bush leagues in far north Queensland and the culture of Sydney’s eastern suburbs has turned Todd around.

Like Tonguey we wish him all the best, except when playing Canberra.

UPDATE: World+Dog is reporting that Todd has indeed been named the NRL’s best and fairest.

Do you watch footy or just listen to what your mother’s brother’s cousin told you?

Exactly. He may be a dickhole, but he’s had a very good season, and even stayed out of the headlines except for the whole setting his mate on fire incident at the start of the year.

I really love how sportsmen who have been a disgrace in the public eye can get rewarded or given a lot of publicity. It seems like the more of an idiot you are, the more you get attention, tv shows or the Dally M Medal!

But, good on him for making a bad past into a better future and lets just hope it doesn’t go to his head. He’d have to be an idiot if he goes off the rails again.

I say good on him for turning his life around. Maybe he will do like Joel Monaghan did and play a few seasons in Sydney, get homesick and sign back with the Raiders.

I also noticed he took his mum to the awards. Maybe she was there to enforce good behaviour? Brendan Fevola should take note….

I am really perplexed as to whether to tip the Roosters again this weekend…
What likelihood he’ll still be hungover from the party?

He did play brilliantly this year, taking the Roosters from last to the top 8. I still don’t think his leaving Canberra was a bad thing for the team – Campese only came into his own when Carney left and he became the sole playmaker. And it taught the other players that they could get sacked for acting like a fool, even if you’re the best player…

after his long period of misbehavior (unsolicited golden showers, property damage, drink driving, banishment from Goulburn, etc) this would be a ‘return to average’ event.
Either this is a high water mark and a new downward slide starts here, or its a glorious dawn for Todd Carney Version 2.0.1 (Features:stability and incontinence problems resolved, tendency to lie about version 1 )

Toddy is the winner.

Have a drink on me…

Shit human? Maybe. Player of 2010? Yeah, probably. He has been THE Roosters’ go-to man and holy crap he has scored some freakish tries. I, like most people in Canberra watched this car crash happen in slow motion and I hope he has turned his life around. Good luck to him, the NRL needs more of these stories.

I was overseas when he was a raider so I don’t know of his exploits here but he certainly is one of the better players in the NRL. If he really was that bad, and if he does win the Dally M, the NRL can use the ‘bad boy turned good’ publicity as it needs a bit of good news this season after the Storm debacle and the slowly being exposed betting scandle.

I can’t believe that the NRL would consider giving any award to the only person I know of in modern Australian history to be banished from their own home town.

Are you serious? He pissed on someone in public?

I don’t care how tough he thinks he is, he would have been chewing on a bar stool sandwich.

The kid can play, but damn, he’s no man yet. Not even a boy.

Now if only Matthew Newton could “do a Carney” and turn his life around for the better.

or wee on a head in All Bar for that matter.

He may have behaved like a total pratt over the years, but you have to concede that he has become a powerhouse on the field with the new team. Not often I’ve been game to tip against them this season…
