Grey’s latest eye on media has the world’s most under-resourced newsroom feeling pretty good about itself.

The most recent round of online readership research commissioned by Grey has revealed that weekly usage of online news sites is on the increase. Using the agency’s proprietary Ask Canberra tool, the study – involving 1000 Canberrans – looked at preferred sources of online news and opinion. The Canberra Times website leads with 29.9% of respondents saying they had visited the site within the previous week (up from 22% in April). Smh.com.au and news.com.au were also well-visited by Canberrans with scores of 25.5% and 21.5% respectively.

The Riot-ACT increased weekly visitation from 11.7% in April to 13.2% in September, while Her Canberra and Out in Canberra also reported increases. The City News, local radio and metropolitan newspaper sites were all new inclusions on the most recent study.

Many thanks to our contributors who help make it possible.

I find it odd that abc.net.au isn’t in that list.

Does the Canberra Times have a website? You learn lotzastuff here.

I find the Canberra Times website pretty irritating too. I am also a member of the now generation, and want to know, not what happened yesterday, but 15 min ago. Hence I tend to look to the-RA, the ABC website, and for huge things, even twitter (yes, I know, it’s a little bit hipster).

Congrats to the RA team for this numerical measure of your awesomeness.

seriously, who goes to the CT? Summarised versions of limited number of not very good articles plus things published on other websites yesterday or a few days earlier. Wonder if the mitchell fire caused a bump?

as News Ltd starts introducing paid websites, should see a nice jump in the rest.

That said, given that some of the respondents will have visited multiple sites, there are an awful lot of people not getting news online (or, at least, not from the major commercial players).

Well done guys! The Riot is always my first port of call when I want to keep up with what is happening around our fine town!
