The ABC has a story on the former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social justice commissioner Tom Calma being named the ACT Australian of the Year:
Dr Calma has dedicated the past 40 years to improving the lives of Indigenous Australians.
“I hope that I’m able to inspire others to think about getting involved,” he said.
Dr Calma is a former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social justice commissioner, and has been leading the campaign to close the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
He says there needs to be more consistency to address inequalities.
Former Chief Scientist Jim Peacock has taken the Senior’s gong.
