Tonsillectomy - Laser or Thermal Fusion?

Sadly, the time has come, after decades of recurrent tonsillitis, I have been advised to have a tonsillectomy. However, I find the idea of two weeks post-operative pain, something I just do not want to endure.

Thanks to the joys of the internet, there are a couple of newer tonsillectomy techniques that have shorter recovery times, especially compared to the traditional removal methods, and less pain are available. The problem is finding an ENT Surgeon who does the procedures. While Canberra has some excellent surgeons, the new, modern techniques usually land in Sydney or Melbourne first. I am happy to travel to Sydney or Melbourne to have the procedure done.

So, this is a call-out to RiotAct readers. Does anyone know of an ENT who uses Thermal Fusion (also known as Thermal Welding- it’s a horrid name!) or does Laser Tonsillectomy?

Ha – I just saw Dr Makeham today. Nice bloke, offered me advice on the surgical option to clean up my neck to improve my snoring and sleep problems.

I really liked the fact that he engaged with me as a regular bloke, was willing to tactfully suggest that my tonsils are grotty and could come out, but if I put down the god damn fork and lose some weight I probably wouldn’t need surgery.

Yeah, I’d probably let him go to town on my tonsils with a red hot laser.

+1000 – Dr Makeham is the best surgeon in town. He’s a lovely fellow to boot. He did my tonsils and my daughter’s too. The only problem is it takes a while to get in to see him, although the waiting time for surgery is quite short.

Ring Canberra ENT – 6281 3022. Our son (aged 4) is getting his adenoids and tonsils out soon with Dr Tim Makeham and he will be using the laser.
