Too early to blame Underbelly?

So let’s recap:

Now of course it’s highly likely that all three events are unrelated.

On the other hand, through this period Channel 9 has been running non stop in its efforts to glamourise the murderous thugs of Sydney and Melbourne.

Any chance our own thugs have been getting ideas?

These events dont have anything to do with Underbelly. As far as I know, no one has got their tits out at any of these incidents.

Of course, we now know that two women were connected to the ‘Murder at the Oracle Apartments’.

What a great title for an Agatha Christie pastiche. Looks like a job for Shortis and Simpson, or if we were living in Scotland, the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society (http://www.overplayers.org.uk/html/farnmain.html)

Thugs and ideas? What next? Our own homegrown Ocean’s Eleven? An incredibly complex scheme to rob the Canberra Casino? or the London Circuit branch of the Commonwealth Bank? Who would be Canberra’s answer to George Clooney and Brad Pitt? Who is our Tony Soprano?

Canberra would be a much better place if we had a better class of criminal, with the intelligence to be inspired by a higher standard of tv programming. Perhaps then we could finally look forward to a series of highly entertaining murders committed by someone working in the AFP’s own forensics division.

I reckon we should blame the news, that is always full of blood and violence AND it’s real life…

And we should blame all old spaghetti westerns, lost in space, the jetsons, road runner, x-men, the original batman series, the hulk, mythbusters, sesame street, humphrey bear, huey, A Country Practice, Home improvement, the muppets, teachers, bike riders, car drivers, bus drivers, truck drivers, prostitutes, criminals, police, public servants, trash collectors, politicians, druggies, corrections officers, car makers, bakers, butchers, checkout chicks AND TIM THE F$CK HEAD BAILEY!!!

(Sorry if I left you out and you feel vindicated, please ask to be added to this post if you feel this way.)

I think my main point is the people to blame would be the people doing it yeah? This sh!t has been happening in America for over 100 years – OHH I FORGOT AMERICANS!!!

The point is not that those committing the crimes should not be held personally accountable for their crimes.

Rather it is that instead of seeing violence in far away places the underbelly series has set it in local, recognisable contexts. And then thrown masses of glamour, excitement, and sex on top.

If you ask me, this sounds like a T/T/ACA story in the making. I blame them instead.

I’m all for blaming Underbelly.
This isn’t the first time either. Coz I noticed some very odd behaviour around Canberra in the late 90s when the Teletubbies first started broadcasting.

I have heard some of my Year 7 students talk about “last night’s episode of Underbelly” – that’s 12/13 year olds…

Now that is bad. Leaving aside the absolute trashiness of the content, the current series glorifies the criminal class to an extent not seen in previous series. Some parents truly do not give a shit.

I don’t think it’s ever too early to blame television for the actions of criminals. In fact, many journalists make an enormous contribution to the national economy by making very similar claims about lawnmowers that cause prostate cancer, breakfast cereals inciting sex crimes and promiscuous women being responsible for earthquakes (or was that a fundamentalist religious group? I can’t tell the difference). You might argue that the country wouldn’t have survived the GFC if it weren’t for trumped up nonsense like this, so no; it most definitely is not too early to haul the producer of Underbelly into court on these three murder charges, and let the murderers go.

In fact, I would like to start the next one and suggest that Masterchef is to blame for the cardiac arrest that killed my father in 2005. If it weren’t for their delicious, appetising marvels, he would still be alive today! Matt Preston must be charged with murder!

I have heard some of my Year 7 students talk about “last night’s episode of Underbelly” – that’s 12/13 year olds… I don’t watch it ’cause of the violence… but then, many of these kids were raised on a diet of Grand Theft Auto…

I realise it’s a novel idea, but could we perhaps for a moment entertain a notion of personal responsibility and blame the criminals rather than a TV show?

It’s probably more likely to be related to the lack of police in the city where you could run from north to south with a gun in your hand and not get caught. For those few who would get caught, the judge will tell them that they’ve been a naughty boy and send them home.

I don’t think Underbelly included any manslaughters

Will someone please fix this problem then?
