The Department of Territory and Municipal Services has kindly released their list of the most registered dog names for 2010.

    1. Max
    2. Jack
    3. Molly
    4. Bella
    5. Jessie
    6. Charlie
    7. Sam
    8. Lucy
    9. Toby
    10. Oscar

Possibly a good idea to cross these names off the potentials list for children.

If you want a list of names to avoid, there’s a long list at ‘Things Bogans Like’ (http://thingsboganslike.com/a-bogue-by-any-other-name/)

@23

Who said it was the state? It was Mrs. Bastard putting her foot down again.

@19

What business is it of the state as to what you wish to name your dog?

i always liked Alan as a name for a dog

..And I suppose that should be THIS year’s…

I’m tipping next year’s number 1 with a bullet.

I wanted to call my dog “you”. (“Oy You!”)
Not allowed.
I then wanted to call him Brian. (Like andym’s “barry”)
Not allowed.
So the poor sod is now named after an American entreprenuer, the musical based on whom my daughter had seen the week previous.

I have two Beagles, Smeagol and Deagol. Won’t see those on any two-bit list nowadays, people have lost thier imaginations.

Anth, anthrop, anthropo…. that’s easy for you to say.

Urgh. Bella from those stupid vampire movies.

She’s a bit of a dog.

“Anthropomorphism” didn’t sound right in my head for what I was meaning there – to paraphrase, “the anthropomorphism of society” would imply that society itslef was being anthropomorphised, whereas “the anthropomorphisation of society” refers to society’s movement towards the practice of anthropomorphism.

In other words, I made it up. But I did it independently from the Americans.

Anthropomorphism. Extra suffixes is americanisationalism innit.

Interestingly enough, Jack and Max are the two most popular boys names of the last decade, according to news.com.au anyway.

QED.

My guess is that it’s got something to do with the social trend of pets acting as substitutes for human children. Anthropomorphisation has a lot to answer for.

If that were the case, shouldn’t dog names reflect the common trend in human names? We would have a myriad of dogs roaming the streets all named Lateeishia, Brandeen, Breeianna, Indigo or whatever US state happens to be popular at the time.

Kramer, you have chosen nice decent names for your kids. None of those names are boganised. *like*

Why is it that 2 of my 3 kids names appear in the above list?!?

Disapointed my all time favourite dog name, Barry, has not made it on the list.

“Here Barry”
“Dinner time Barry”
“Get inside Barry”
and the best of all
“Get ya nose outta there Barry”

Wow. Admittedly dog names aren’t something I keep up with, but since when is the entire list devoid of any ‘classic’ dog names – where’s bingo, rusty and the like? Why are they all ‘human’ names?
