IBNNews have this story on a Austrian woman being hit and killed by a car crossing Commonwealth Ave on the weekend. Its prompted the obvious knee jerk reaction that the city is not safe for pedestrians. I guess the pedestrian lights that are only put up for Floriade fool people into thinking they can cross there??

[Ed. S4anta also sent the following in]

The bastion of all things fine in this nation, The Macquarie News Group (vis their website livenews.com.au) is reporting here that a 68-year-old woman was on a pedestrian crossing on Commonwealth Avenue near Parliament House when she was struck about 6.30 last night.

Thats the 11th fatality this year kiddies.

Shame, shame.

I guess it’s possible that someone makes a mistake and these things happen occasionally. When crossing a road, it’s always in the best interests of the pedestrian to watch carefully. But that would mean a member of the public taking responsibility for themself, and this is Canberra, so we can’t have that!

Austrian tourist – maybe expecting the traffic from the opposite direction?

touirst = Qbn slang for two bratwursts>

BTW Jazz, what’s a ‘touirst’?
An Austrain with tourettes?

Drove past this just after it happened – was right at the place where the temporary traffic lighst are set up for floriade. Maybe they should put signage on the posts when they are not actually traffic lights.

Something to say that this is not actually a ped x-ing – cross at your own risk.

Alternatively the papes are all bleeting that there is nowhere to cross over in that area of commonwealth avenue – I say why not go under the road.

In saying so there is a fairly clear run up to the accident site – visibility at 100+ meters so

What’s an Austrain tourist? Did they perhaps mean Austrian? Very sloppy proof reading letting this go to (electronic) print with this error. Don’t their computers have a spell check/dictionary program?

Was the Austrain tourist not aware that she was crossing a road and that occasionally cars drive on this road?

More proof that Deb Foskey is entirely useless. Yawn.

I was going to blame the lack of light rail, but then I realised that almost made sense.

I blame AWAs.

I blame school closures.

good to see Deb was thinking outside the box in the IBN article. she kinda forgot that you can go under Commonwealth ave if you head towards the lake from the floriade temporary lights

“Struck on a pedestrian crossing”?
The only crossing I can think of near Parliament House is when you cross Coronation Dr between the Hyatt and the Canadian Embassy, and on the other side.

If she was on a cossing, it sound like a driver not paying enough attention.
