The National Gallery is sharing the numbers for the recently concluded Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition:

The National Gallery of Australia today announced that the Toulouse-Lautrec: Paris & the Moulin Rouge exhibition attracted 170 201visitors from all over Australia to Canberra, making it one of the Gallery’s Top 10 visited exhibitions ever.

The exhibition closed on Tuesday 2 April 2013, after a three and a half month season, giving Australian audiences the opportunity to view the first major retrospective of works by one of the most influential Post-Impressionists, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Director of the National Gallery of Australia, Ron Radford AM said today, ‘The Toulouse-Lautrec exhibition attracted 170 201 visitors from all across Australia, with almost 80% travelling from interstate to Canberra, and injecting an estimated $37 million* into the ACT economy.’

Jane Avril was voted the most popular work in show. Possibly thanks to having its name in large letters on the print!

Roll on Turner!

UPDATE: Andrew Barr is calling it a win:

Almost 80 per cent of the 170,201 visitors travelled to Canberra to attend the exhibition in our Centenary year. An estimated $37 million was injected into the ACT economy as a result of this world-class exhibition.

The accommodation sector benefited greatly from the exhibition, with 18,869 wholesale ticket packages (room and exhibition ticket) sold. This represents an increase of over 2,000 wholesale ticket sales from last year’s Renaissance exhibition.

Wouldn’t about 10% of locals be quite reasonable for an exhibition of this sort? I don’t know the answer, just a perception.

Toulouse was a bit of a hack in any case.

hmmm. 20% of 170,201 is 34,000 locals bothering to go.

I’m also not sure the greatly hyped centenary blockbuster creeping into the top ten is a triumph.

I’d like to see what percentage of sales was made up of those $5 frilly undies.
Really looking forward to Turner though.
