Tourist treasure hunt

I think that the national capital authority pplz (the ones that are left) should set up a treasure map style course for tourists between the major attractions in Canberra. Each tourist could have a map which gets stamped at each attraction and once complete drop it off, at the inaccessible, tourist centre on northbourne avenue to go into a prize draw or get a cheap memento.

Any other ideas for attracting tourists? Or getting them to spend more money?

The ferry idea is great! I actually enjoy doing touristy things around Canberra when I have time. I went on one of the “Summer in Canberra” NCA walks along Anzac Pde with a guide talking about the memorials. It was so interesting (and I think the guide was very gracious answering all my questions between memorials). Canberra has some great places to visit – I just wish I had more time!

The ferry is a great idea. Ther NCA did publish a school holiday explorers map and hand out a kids showbag at Regatta Point. I know my kids did it one summer. However when a checkpoint was the Governor General buried at St Johns, you know there isn’t much good material around.

I was also disappointed this year that the big venues didn’t put on any drawcards to excite families

X marks the spot of the Porritt murder weapon. Fun for the whole family.

There already is a tourist passport which they take to all the attractions and get it stamped.

I like the ferry idea.

A shuttlebus to parliament house would also help. I often see exhausted looking tourists trekking along the road between civic and parlt hse – it’s a long walk.

Events are important in getting tourists to visit. Better promotion of the events we already have, and improving the experience when they’re running, would help a lot.

When is BigSplash gonna get upgraded? I want new and bigger slides!

I always thought we should have a ferry on the lake that runs between the Museum, the end of Anzac Parade, and Commonwealth Place putting all the major tourist attractions within walking distance. It could be a daily fare and have a ‘hop on hop off’ ticket. It could even have a tourist commentary similar to those open topped double decker buses in other cities.
