Tours of the new Belconnen Bus facilities

A jaunty Chief Minister is letting you all know “Tours acquaint commuters with Belco bus stations”

The new Belconnen Bus Stations will be showcased this weekend during free tours of the facilities which includes six new bus platforms, an indoor waiting lounge and outdoor bus shelters, Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Jon Stanhope, announced today.

Mr Stanhope said the free familiarisation tours to showcase the newly upgraded Bus Stations would take place between 11:30am and 4pm on Saturday 13 November 2010 and during the Belconnen Community Festival.

“Improvements to the Belconnen Bus Stations and newly extended Cohen street will see the area become fully operational from Monday 15 November 2010 as ACTION’s Network 10 timetable commences, Mr Stanhope said.

“The Westfield Bus Station off Lathlain Street integrates with the new entrance of the shopping centre,”

“Patrons can look forward to a welcoming indoor waiting lounge, new amenities and two large outdoor bus shelters with capacity to seat up to 120 patrons. Adjoining cafes will open in Westfield Belconnen in coming months.

“Commuters to and from the Belconnen Community Bus shelter will benefit from six new platforms with increased weather protection.

Mr Stanhope said all buses travelling into and out of the Belconnen City Centre would travel through each of the new Westfield and Belconnen Community Bus Stations and the existing Cohen Street Bus Station.

Everyone clear on that?

Seven new (and unsynchronised) traffic lights in a single square kilometre. Does anyone else think this is overkill for Belconnen?

Ummm, no John. It doesn’t. There is a dog leg for the buses that has required a set of traffic lights to be added on Lathlain Street just 20m away from the other new set of traffic lights. Which in turn is 50m from another set of traffic lights. Which is 50m away from another set. Which is….(you get the idea).

And while I am on the topic of traffic works in Belconnen, did we really have to lose a lane on the west-bound Gininderra drive for a bike path…which is already next to a bike path? And has anyone noticed that slip lanes are getting smaller and smaller. I could not believe when they reduced the size of the slip lane from Coulter drive onto the east-bound Belconnen Way. All this has done is increase congestion for no sensible reason.

I was shown around the new facilities the other day – report on my blog http://onfourwheels.blogspot.com/2010/11/belconnen-abs-and-westfield-new-bus.html

Interesting report. The photos do indeed show a total lack of shelter for people waiting outside.

I’ve cancelled my weekend plans to go for a tour of the new bus stop.

Someone had better christen it with a ‘RIP Mully’ tag.

Why would you need a tour of some bus stops? Point at the information of which buses depart from each stop, point at the shelters and say sit there to wait for the bus that will be late or never come. End tour.

This is a once in lifetime opportunity to see the new Belco interchange before it smells like piss.

You’d better get in real quick, then. Ah, too late.

A free guided tour of the Belco bus station. I will hardly be able to sleep, such will be the anticipation with which I await this glorious event.

I bet that Stanhopeless drives to the event.

I kinda preferred the old interchange. But I only catch a bus through belco once a year. Can someone who uses it daily give me their impression on it’s usability, function, speed, comfort, etc?

I’m very upbeat about the potential outcomes this redevelopment presents for bus patrons. Being able to sit indoors and enjoy a coffee while waiting for a bus certainly sounds more pleasant than standing around in the previous isolated and unwelcoming interchange.

It will be interesting to see the standard of how the “indoor lounge” is maintained, and by whom.
