I need to get a tow bar fitted on my 08 Lancer.

Can anyone help with a recommendation of who can do a good job at a reasonable price?

Anyone had recent experience of how much I should expect to pay these days?

Northside preferable.

I contacted four local businesses recently to enquire about doing some work for me.

I would highly recommend Towbar Discounts https://www.facebook.com/TowbarDiscounts/. He was able to come to our house with an assistant and perform the work in a couple hours for a reasonable price.

Canberra Towbar Fitters was helpful but they wanted me to drop the car off at their shop in Mitchell and planned to have it for the entire day. They probably would have been fine but their quoted price was also close to double what Towbar Discounts charged.

Pride Auto in Phillip just never replied to a follow-up question so I can’t recommend them.

Trailer Camper Australia in Fyshwick just replied with an unhelpful, single “no” when I asked if they could perform the work so I can’t recommend them either.

Hope my recent experience is helpful.

Max at Woden Towbars. Have used him a few times. Very friendly old guy who has very good rates and has been there, done that when it comes to towbars.

Take it to a dealer and chances are an apprentice will be taking to your shiny Lancer with power tools. Do you really want that?

Yep haig it was no dramas also just got my roof racks off them with cradle for a paddling boats

Kemble st in Mitchell I paid $500 for my falcon with a 2.5tonne towing capacity

Suspect this refers to Haig Park Offroad; I used these guys for a standard tow bar for a Magna about 5 years ago. They did good – no dramas, cost about 4 hunj all up from memory.

Don’t go to a dealer, whatever you do – dealer estimate for mine was more than triple what I eventually paid.

This. I had exactly the same experience (with Ford, not the Magna, fwiw).

what do you pay?

It depends on what type of towing you’re going to do. box trailer to the tip on weekends or something more substantial. I mean a lancer isn’t going to be able to pull a horse float etc so it depends on what type you get and what its rating is. Plus you probably should be aware of the tare weight of your car.

eg – a strap on the back jobbie or say a hayman reece hitch receiver.

Can recommend Pride Auto Accessories in Fyshwick – quick and easy to deal with, for a good price!

Not a recommendation, but there is Towbar Discounts at: http://towbardiscounts.hopout.com.au/

You could get a email quote at least on towbardiscounts@gmail.com

The CJ requires a special wiring loom patch, I think – I think it would be prohibitive to attempt to wire it from scratch.

From memory, the mitsubishi dealership in Woden wasn’t *too* bad (very rare occasion factory service/parts are actually competitive!). If you bought from there they will more than likely give you a reasonable deal.

Looking at around $650 for the CJ Lancer kit then add a few hours of labour.
