A new toy retailer will move into the Majura Park Shopping Centre at Canberra Airport in spring, employing up to 25 local staff and helping to revitalise an idle corner of the centre.

Despite taking up only a part of the old Toys R Us site, Australian firm Toymate will be the biggest toy retailer in the ACT, according to an Airport spokesperson.

The new 1560 square metre store will include the company’s distinctive fit-out, a parent room and a large area dedicated to baby gear and preschool toys.

Head of Property at Canberra Airport, Richard Snow said the Toymate deal would be the first stage in the re-development of that part of the centre, which would eventually accommodate up to five new retailers.

“Toymate has an excellent reputation, is known for its outstanding customer service, price match promise and great in-store experience. It’s a perfect fit for shoppers at Majura Park,” he said.

Toymate Director Danny Bloom said: “We are excited to become part of the Canberra community and we are looking to share our passion for toys.”

Toymate currently has locations throughout New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland. It swooped on Toys R Us sites when that company closed 44 stores and went into liquidation with the loss of 700 jobs last year.

Toys R Us recently announced it was back in business.

I don’t think it is in a very good position there.

That end of Majura Park is a dead zone. Poor access from within the centre, access from an end of the carpark nobody wants to park in because it is further away from the main entrance and Costco.

If that isn’t bad enough, poor old Lollipops has really got the rough end of the pineapple, hidden behind Aldi and “TBC”. It looks like “TBC” will be in the box seat here, I don’t know why Toymate and Lollipops have been shafted like they have.
