Two new public housing homes built by a team dominated by tradeswomen have been handed over to the ACT Government, Minister for Women Joy Burch said today.

The two adaptable dwellings in Richardson were built by Housing ACT, in conjunction with Ruiz Constructions, over 10 months between August 2013 and May 2014. In all, 14 tradeswomen worked on the project.

The two and three bedroom properties will now become home to people with disabilities.

“The project has highlighted the opportunities available to women in non-traditional roles within the construction industry,” Ms Burch said.

“Construction has been a male-dominated industry but that does not mean it has to continue that way. The role of men and women in family environments is changing, and the workforce should be adapting to these changes accordingly.”

Housing ACT’s purpose is to provide safe, affordable and appropriate housing that meets the needs and circumstances of low income and disadvantaged families.

“This year’s budget priorities include the continuation of improved services to the most vulnerable in the community through expanding options for housing older people, people experiencing homelessness and continuing to implement initiatives for people with a disability,” Ms Burch said.

“The successful completion of these dwellings demonstrates the ACT Government’s commitment towards this objective, all the while increasing female representation in the construction industry in Canberra.”

The completed dwellings will now be transferred to the ACT’s public housing stock for use by tenants with disabilities.
