Gungahlin Al has sent in this pic of work underway to re-open Northbourne Avenue after a eucalypt had the ill manners to come down in rush hour.
Thanks to everyone who’s written in. If you’ve got pix send them in to images@the-riotact.com .
UPDATE: Ben (hereafter Lucky Ben) has sent in this on-the-spot account.
This is a photo I took yesterday with the tree on Northbourne. Was driving along and heard the crack and put the brakes on rather quickly. Consider myself very lucky.
This’ll give them more ammo in their quest to get rid of all trees. High winds and the increasingly wind-tunnel nature of Civic is not a good combo for trees.

I don’t think so – from my work on Maxine Cooper’s tree advisory panel I recall the horticulturalists saying it has come about due to the frequent irrigation of the grass – the roots never needed to go deep to find water. You can see a lot of them rocking in the ground during winds. They will continue to come down with every storm.
I guess that is why the government isn’t so concerned about the public transport priority project recommending reconfiguring the whole corridor and losing the trees – because they are all going to go anyway sooner or later.
Those trees come down with monotonous regularity. Is that variety particularly prone to being shallow-rooted?
Lucky it didn’t hit a car and/or kill someone. I know we are the bush capital but gee some of these trees are dangerous.
They’re making way for light rail.. one tree at a time
and it’s open again. It took the firies less than 15 minutes to chop it up and clear it away.
