A burst water main on Wakefield Avenue is causing traffic delays and disrupting water supply in Canberra’s north this afternoon (26 February).

Delays are expected into the evening on Wakefield Avenue eastbound between Northbourne Avenue and Dooring Street. Icon Water is working to repair the issue.

Repairs to the road will also be required and are expected to take some time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

“We expect an interruption to supply for approximately six hours,” Icon Water announced at around 3:30 pm this afternoon.

“It’s also likely that the burst main and subsequent changes in water flow may lead to temporary discoloured water throughout North Canberra.

“This is due to natural sediment in the pipes being stirred, and this should clear with normal use within 24 hours of the works being completed.”

Icon Water has recommended that residents not drink water that appears, tastes or smells objectionable.

“It’s also better not to use household appliances, such as your dishwasher or washing machine, due to possible staining or discolouration of clothes. However, if your water appears clear you can continue with your normal water use.”

Icon Water has apologised to customers in the area who are currently without water, and to members of the community whose commute home this afternoon may take longer than planned.

Further updates to repairs and water supply are available through www.iconwater.com.au.
