Traffic lights at Pialligo - WHY?!

So this morning at 7.45 coming from Majura Ave and going through to Hindmarsh Dr I noticed that all three sets of traffic lights this transition requires were not working. No lights at all. No flashing amber, no warning signs, no Police directing traffic, nada.

10 minutes later I called AFP from Narrabundah to report this (being a good citizen I thought it best not to phone the police while driving since I do not have handsfree). Apparently they already knew that the traffic lights were out, and informed me this was the case all through Pialligo towards Queanbeyan.

It had not yet occurred to them, however, to send anyone out to direct traffic as “people generally sort themselves out”. Given today would be the first day of “peak” hour (as peak as it gets for the first working week of January), I thought perhaps a policeman would be required to direct traffic through the major intersection on the northside of the lake where the Monaro Hwy meets Morshead Dr (the intersection nearest the airport).

I suggested, politely, that they may want to send at least one poor officer to the major intersection at least as the freight trucks travelling on the Monaro don’t always get along very well with the every-day commuter, who in turn don’t always get along very well with the bored or overwrought taxi drivers etc etc. This suggestion empowered the switch lady to transfer me to “Operations”, who let the phone ring out.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

I don’t know if they got someone to direct traffic – but I hope there wasn’t an accident in the meantime.

Apart from the general unhelpfulness of the AFP, it strikes me as ironic that they rip out a perfectly good roundabout – which doesn’t require electricity to function – in place of traffic lights that not only hold-up traffic and make the trip in the morning seemingly longer, but apparently can’t be relied on!

[End rant here]

Good to know someone was sent out – I figured us drivers wouldn’t be left to our own devices too long.

Also thank you Vandam for your positive and kind comments. Always a pleasure to meet such nice Canberrans.

As I said in my post I was given the impression by AFP that they knew about the outage, that they weren’t sending anyone out, and that it wasn’t needed. I was highly amused by the comments by the receptionist that “people generally sort themselves out”.

And glad that I was wrong and that someone did, in fact, go out there to help us 1000s of drivers through the intersection that morning.

According to the News Radio updates yesterday morning, power had been cut to the traffic lights. The impression they gave indicated this was accidental. They also reported of an accident somewhere along the affected roads at around 8:20, or so I thought I heard.

@vandam, maybe you should take some of your own advice, haha.

Albigeois, Do you honestly know how many people go through that intersection everyday??? 1000’s. Meaning numerous people no doubt called before you did. (you seem to be having a sook because you weren’t the first one that called and therefore seemingly not important.)

And as for cops getting out there, It may be a shock surprise but they don’t travel in high powered space crafts, meaning if it took you 10 minutes to get from pialligo to Narrabundah, it’s going to take the cops the same time.

Use you brain next time before posting such crap.

The lady who rang the radio reckoned that people were sailing through the bung lights and it was amazing there hadn’t been an accident, so it’s unlikely that it was planned.

To answer the question of the OP maybe they had to temporarily cut power to the lights so they could do some work in the area like installing or dismantling street light poles.

I went through the intersection of Morsehead Dr and Monaro Hwy/Pialligo Ave just before 9am and the lights were still out (I had heard a report about it on the radio as I was driving there) and there was a lone police officer standing in the middle of the intersection directing traffic. He seemed to be doing a good job. Surprisingly there didn’t seem to be all that much traffic around, people must still be on holidays.

Cool – is the Monash Drive road definitely going away??

Yay the greens have done something.

Oh. Thanks abc, that’s what I thought … Lane not Ave.

Not the old Monash Drive plan, surely? Through the foothills? Hope not.

Monash Drive in not related, it starts on Fairbairn Ave closer to the War Memorial and goes around the other side of Mt Majura.

I see – the post I replied to originally was referring to Majura Lane then, not Majura Ave?

I expect that the build-up of traffic with peak hour would reduce the likelihood of an accident. With the build up of traffic, fewer cars move, and if no one moves, no one can have a prang, right?

The AFP’s logic seems quite reasonable if you think about it that way.

Monash Drive has been on the territory plan since Adam was a boy.. runs along the back of Ainslie and was to link up with Phillip Ave at Hackett…

But as part of the Greens deal with Labor, it will be taken of the TP….

Construction starts this year on a fly over linking Monaro Highway and Majura Road.. and Majura Road is on the wish list to be duplicated…. Majura Ave in north Canberra is where people speed until they hit a tree.

Hmm. There was a patrol there within 10 minutes of the AFP being notified. 2 actually. And they were there until the problem was fixed. I’m sorry someone gave you the run-around, but rest assured it was dealt with as quickly as possible. Want something to really whinge about? Talk to the government about more money so we can have more patrols out on the road to help ease the pressure on this sort of stuff! 🙂

I think the reason why the change from round-a-bout to traffic lights is that it is a small piece of a much larger puzzle. The grand plan is to extend the Monaro Highway through to Majura Avenue with a continuous new road/highway and bridges. The mentioned intersection will become an off-ramp exit point. These points are usually controlled by traffic lights.

They are replacing all those intersections adn roundabouts with lights. It’s a shame. Something like Adelaide Avenue would be nicer, but apparently that kind of road is expensive.

the tangle where Majura road, Moreshead and Fairbairn meet is a shocker, it locks up sometimes so no one can move. You see the lights turn green up ahead, but no one can move anywhere.

reminds me of brisbane airport. I wonder if they got the idea from brisbane city council?

I had the same trouble giving a location of “Charnwood McDonalds”. The dispatcher wanted to know the street etc.

I was reporting some very small unsupervised children dashing between moving cars that were there without parents.

The last time I rang the AFP, it was to report someone had had an accident “on the Barton Highway where Cockington Green is”. I then spent several minutes explaining to the stupid woman in the dispatch centre where Cockington Green was.
I’ve not bothered offering them civic assistance since.

By the time I went through at 8.15ish, there was a friendly policeman directing traffic.

Roundabouts may not need electrickery to work, but they don’t work at all for high throughput intersections. I’m glad I don’t need to wait 20 minutes to get off the Monaro and on to Pialligo anymore, thank you very much.

Hahaha I remember the day I called AFP to advise them the traffic lights were out at the Coulter Dr, William Hovell intersection. I rang ONLY because there was nearly an accident and peak hour traffic would soon be building up. (a car going straight through in the opposite direction didn’t even bother slowing down, a car trying to turn thought it would be safe) An annoyed operator told me they had received several calls and it didn’t seem neccessary to send someone out…

I even tried to call both 104.7 and 106.3 for their timesaver traffic – No answer.

Figured why bother next time…
