ACT traffic police will this month target the “fatal five”, the highest contributing factors to fatal vehicle collisions on ACT roads: alcohol or drug-impaired driving, not wearing a seatbelt, speeding, intersections and driver distraction.

ACT Policing is basing its road safety campaign for the month on driver awareness of these factors.

Acting Superintendent Traffic Operations Nicole Levings said the five factors contributed heavily to collisions on our roads.

“Some of these collisions, tragically, have fatal outcomes,” she said.

“Five people have already lost their lives on our roads this year. That is five too many.

“All road users need to take personal responsibility for safety on our roads. Steering clear of the five irresponsible behaviours is all we ask for everyone’s safety.”

Meanwhile, they will continue to hand out licences to people who are untrained and clueless and have failed to demonstrate any ability behind the wheel of a car.

I understand that a number of single vehicle accidents may actually be suicides. I don’t know how you target that other than keep supporting Lifeline et al.

Will the AFP put boots on the ground, or in this case tyres on the tar, in order to action this new incentive? There always seems to be a warning that more police will be targeting drivers but we never see any more police than any other time of the year. You can’t catch them if you sit in the office all day.

So basically they’re targeting all the poor drivers while ignoring those who purposely drive dangerously?

They’re going to ban intersections?
