Home grown telco Transact have announced that they’re all signed up to be a Retail Service Provider on the National Broadband Network.

The agreement will see TransACT provide Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband services to customers over the NBN in addition to delivering FTTP to existing customers in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

“TransACT has been delivering FTTP voice, video and ISP solutions since 2007 so we are well suited to being an RSP on the NBN,” Ivan Slavich, TransACT Chief Executive Officer said.

“As an RSP on the NBN we will continue to deliver superior products and services to our customers, complementary to our existing networks in the ACT and regional Victoria.”

All that is means is that Transact gets paid for work it was already doing in the new estates.
Pity the areas of Canberra which do not get even 1Mb/sec speed.
No plans for those areas

No – this is an announcement that TransACT are going to retail services over the NBN – that’s not the same as TransACT laying cable.

Now if TransACT come to some type of agreement with NBN Co, there may be a time when the NBN is running over fibre that TransACT have laid, but the retailing of services over those lines will be a completely separate matter. If the NBN buy TransACT’s existing fibre, or pay TransACT to lay new fibre in new developments, it’ll be part of the NBN, and people attached to it will have far more choice of ISP’s than they currently do.

As for the areas of Canberra that currently have terrible internet connections, there certainly are plans to address those areas…it’s called the NBN.

A positive step. Will these new NBN transact plans be available to transact FTTP users?

The thought of still paying a premium to have a telephone connected still galls me. Currently paying $90pm for 50G+50G@10M/2M – internode on NBN have 60G@25M/5M for $50pm. Would be nice to almost half our costs and more than double our speeds…

It would seem very hypocritical if they were to request that the NBN use their infrastructure as opposed to overbuilding as in the taxpayers’ best interests and then refuse to provide an equivalent service to the NBN.

The network purchase aspect seems a whole lot more complicated though:

Does this mean they will now start to make some money and pay back Actew the $80 million odd they owe them?
