Whirlpool reports that TransACT has won a contract to supply the new suburb of Forde in Canberra with Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), enabling broadband, telephone and TV to travel over the technology.

Located between Mulligans Flat and Horse Park Drive, the Forde community will be one of the first masterplanned communities in Canberra and is expected to contain more than 1,000 homes and a population of 2,500 people by 2013“, said the announcement.

One downside to these developments is that the telco involved is granted a virtual monopoly on fixed line telecommunications services to residents.

“$169.95/month for 60GB at ADSL2+ like speeds.”

Is a bloody rip off compared to some overseas pricing. My connection at home is 17mbit/sec cable at $79 a month for 10Gb and that’s a rip off to but its the fastest speed I can get for my apartment.

And Transact will be that different?

$169/month is Telstra’s FTTN pricing (not TransACTs)

$169.95/month for 60GB at ADSL2+ like speeds.

Great – except you’ll have to bundle in your phone/mobile/electricity/gas/water/solar/oxygen/firstborn with ACTEWAGL.

It would, in all probability, become a “declared service” which means that the telco would be forced to wholesale services over the network to other telcos.
