Transporting goods from Sydney to Canberra

Hi all

I’m needing to move some large goods from Sydney to Canberra – a bunk bed and a cubby house. They’re second hand and I need to pick them up from people’s houses.

Can anyone advise of a cost effective way of doing this? I thought about hiring a ute. Can you recommend somewhere that doesn’t charge the earth? Or any other ideas?

Cheers!

Ring around Hertz/Avis/etc.. in Sydney and ask them if they need a ute or van driven back to Canberra.

They let random ppl drive their vehicles back? I imagine they would charge a standard rental fee no?

(Note: If you go with Europcar, get yourself a spare credit card and cancel it immediately after returning the car and paying the bill unless you want to get involved in dealing with their standard practice of slugging you with random extra charges.)

Yeh and screw up your credit record in the process by having a new credit application listed, then a default listed, just because you cancel the card doesn’t mean if they make a claim against you it won’t affect your credit rating you do realise? That’s not particularly smart advice there henry….

Ring around Hertz/Avis/etc.. in Sydney and ask them if they need a ute or van driven back to Canberra.

Catch the bus up there for $15, pay for the van one-way, you’ll get it over and done with for under $200.

A ute or trailer would be the way to go for big items like that.
Try Kennards Hire.
Or find a mate or a mate’s mate who might do it for petrol money and a few cases of their favourite brew.

Anything voluminous is expensive to transport via couriers. It will need to be boxed up as well. Try interparcel for a represenative quote. Greyhound also have a parcel service.

You could try renting a wagon on weekend rates, presuming the items can be dismantled. Or borrow a mate’s trailer.

Either way you probably won’t get it cheaper than the $100 or so petrol would cost you. Your other option is to back out of the purchases and bargain-hunt locally.

Balmain Rentals..
