Looking for references and suggestions on transporting a Wolfhound x Ridgeback?? from Brisbane to Canberra.

We do have a large car so driving is an option, just not too sure on fuel costs etc.

Happy to hear all and any sensible suggestions on the most cost effective and dog-friendly option.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions (and pointing out my location mistake).

For future reference (for anyone researching transport)…

It ended up being more cost effective to drive up and down than to fly a dog that size down to Canberra. The car got a good run, we got to catch up with a few family and friends who we hadn’t seen in ages, and thanks to connections, we got to stay in Byron Bay for a few nights. If you’re okay with the long drives and silly roadtrips in addition to sharing a car with a canine, I’d suggest this method.

I actually clicked the article just to see if anyone was as frustrated by that as me…

fuel costs?

canberra to brisbane return by driving is probably a bit over 1000 km. Work out cost of petrol for that distance and that’s your price – what – say 2 tanks up and the same back? Find a friend to stay with or stay at a cheap dive for one night. Pack a good cut lunch, get in your car and go. The dog will easily fit on a back seat.

Or ring dogtainers/airports/furniture trucks and compare prices.

That dawg so f###en big u could ride that bitch all the way to CBR.

Well, Bristol to Canberra is a long way…!

(Sorry to be a pedant)

I would try getting on 4wd forums (exploroz.com, etc). Most of them are retirees (reliable and kind) with plenty of room (some tray backs, etc.) making that trip. Offer a token payment like fuel money or whatever.

It would only take 5 minutes, and from what I’ve seen from baggage handlers, I’d trust a half blind retiree any day.

Get a sled, hook the dog up…

(Oh, sorry, I just read the bit about sensible suggestions).

Just remember to put it back in the car when you stop for a break…

You could try Dogtainers – they fly using Australian Air Express, who use Qantas.

If your dogger is still under six months, please consider purchasing an appropriate crate for it – just a precaution against picking up Parvo or any similar nasties.

I use Dogtainers to transport puppies, and they are good value.

Cheers!
