Treasury dispersed?

The West Australian has a story on plans to fling units of Treasury across the country in the hope that proximity to a board room (presumably while a meeting is being held in it) will bring them better knowledge of the “real world”.

With the purpose of having regulators shoulder-to-shoulder with the regulated, much of Treasury’s Markets Group division will be shifted to Sydney.

This group employs about 200 and is in charge of developing rules for the financial and investment sectors, foreign investment and superannuation industry. It also drives competition policy.

With more to follow apparently.

Regulatory capture isn’t supposed to be a policy goal.

Cool, bet there are plenty of Treasury officials looking forward to their closer working relationships. All those tickets to the Opera, corporate boxes at the G, cycling challenges in Italy, and fact finding tours to the Bahamas…nice.

Your views of the executive end of the private sector seem a tad inflated. Tickets to the Opera, corporate boxes at the G, cycling challenges in Italy, and fact finding tours to the Bahamas/France/India are more the premise of sitting Members and Senators rather than private sector Boards in these austere times.

Let’s hope they sack the Gaia worshiping nutjobs that have infiltrated the place and replace them with real grownup staff from interstate. Way too many staff, anyways. The place has overseas posts FFS!

Oh no, they really want more people* to move there. Check out this brand new guide to Sydney.

*Provided you are the “right” sort of person.

This will be an interesting experiment, but I think it’s just as likely to be an exercise in taxpayer funded bureaucratic capture. Whatever the case, people in other departments and agencies will presumably be contemplating the precedent with a mixture of relish and anxiety.

Mr Hockey believes Treasury bureaucrats will develop better and more responsive policy if they spend more time in boardrooms and CBDs.

Looking forward to the new Government’s approach to the AFP and drug trafficking…
