Some people beleive the position of “ACT Discrimination Commissioner and Human Rights Commissioner” to be a useless waste of time and money. Others consider it a vital part of developing the sort of society we might wish to become.

But consider this media release from the Chief Minister announcing the appointment.

… of Dr Helen Watchirs as the ACT Discrimination Commissioner and Human Rights Commissioner.

Dr Watchirs has been filling the position on an interim basis since the departure of Rosemary Follett in March 2004.

That doesn’t sound like our leaders think it’s a very important position does it?

I wonder if the newly annointed Human Rights Commisar will deal with Housing as a Human Right for those who cannot access public housing due to the selfishness of those who have the means to move into the open market?

That’s an idea Indi.

If elected I’d sell up here and buy something nice interstate then put me hand up for public housing and get to jump the queue by trading favours and agreeing to vote for irrelevant hippie causes and become a champion of the council’s human rights legislation

And I’d accept overseas “study” tours in exchange for not rocking the boat

At my age the flesh is weak – I’d snuffle me way into the trough and chortle at the abuse from the punters on RiotAct

barking toad – I’ve got one thing to say to you: run for the Assembly, you may just top foskey due to being more in touch with the punter!

more touchy-feelgood hippie rubbish

“important, independent statutory role” hahahahahaha – in your dreams mayor

just fix the potholes and get the grass cut

and piss off foskey from public housing

If I am not mistaken, Watchirs is an ex-fed public servant (as are so many in the ACT PS)- “acting” is a wonderful thing ! I also seem to remember an announcement saying that former CM Follett was apopointed something else somewhere else – wonder what post the Dear Leader aspires to after his term ? President of the Senate ? Australian Ambassador to the OECD ? Prime Minister of Australia ? Hope fuelled by ambition is also a wonderful thing……
